Part of its original appeal was the promise of nearly unbreakable digital protection. But when a record $6.3 billion is suddenly swiped from the world’s largest crypto exchange, owners of crypto are left feeling awfully vulnerable.

                  Wait, so what happened here?

Binance said hackers broke into an engineer’s laptop, among other breaches, and gained access to the exchange’s digital wallets. These company-controlled accounts hold customer crypto and track who owns what on the platform.

How much money are we talking about?

The hackers initially took $6.3 billion in crypto. Tether, Circle, and other firms have since frozen about $3 billion, leaving roughly $3.3 billion under the hackers’ control.

That’s a staggering amount. So will customers get their money back??

Binance says yes, even though its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) only had about $1.2 billion as of Thursday. It says it will cover the rest with company reserves, rather than pass the losses along to customers.

That means clients’ account balances should remain unchanged as Binance refills its wallets. The company is fronting the money and hopes to offset part of the bill with the roughly $3 billion in assets that other firms have frozen.

Phew. But they’ll surely have to wait a while, right?

Binance says it has now replenished about 95% of the stolen assets, up from roughly 80% in its initial update. The remaining 5% consists largely of smaller, less-liquid tokens that are harder to source. The company says it is buying them through market and over-the-counter channels, a process that could take longer.

Binance began restoring withdrawals in phases on Sunday, starting with major assets including bitcoin and ether. More networks and tokens remain unavailable while the exchange does additional security checks.

Want more Business Insider in your news feed?

Add BI in Google so our reporting is easier to find when you’re searching for what matters.

What are the market implications of this snafu?

As mentioned above, bitcoin and crypto-linked stocks took it on the chin after the disclosure, a reminder that crypto remains vulnerable to a confidence shock — even at a major exchange that’s supposed to have top-notch security.

The hack also revives an awkward question for an industry built around decentralization. Why are so many assets still concentrated in just a few giant platforms?

For Binance, the immediate test is whether it can restore withdrawals and make customers whole. The longer-term one is tougher: Can it contain market panic and win back trust?

Early results have been a mixed bag. Binance said it saw roughly $3.6 billion in net outflows during the first several hours after withdrawals resumed, before activity began to stabilize. That withdrawal data will be the key stat to watch going forward.

Last Friday, while investors were preoccupied by a brutal AI-earnings-driven sell-off, Binance came out of nowhere and disclosed…

[37
100074,329010,931,28,378078,13408,378077,9268,28145,23095,51787,378079,3747,112,14797,61277,64215
post-903195","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-markets","tag-asset","tag-binance","tag-bitcoin","tag-business","tag-company-reserve","tag-crypto","tag-crypto-market-security","tag-digital-wallet","tag-exchange","tag-hack","tag-hacker","tag-less-liquid-token","tag-market","tag-markets","tag-part","tag-pressure","tag-withdrawal
["GET
