My top 10 things to watch Monday, Nov. 2 1. Futures are higher to kick off a jam-packed week of earnings, jobs data, and the midterms. Tech stocks are trying to rebound from a brutal sell-off last week as investors questioned The Greatest Story Ever Told, the rise of the data center. Expect more choppiness ahead. As I wrote in my\u00a0Sunday column , investors’ shift to stocks outside of the AI trade is real, but do they have staying power? We’ll dig in even deeper at Friday’s Annual Meeting for Club members. 2. Blockbuster merger : Chipmaker Marvell is buying Lumentum , which makes optical components, in a deal valued at $115 billion. All-stock: 4.5 shares of Marvell for each share of Lumentum. Business for both companies is extraordinarily strong. Marvell is looking to dominate connectivity as AI data centers move toward scale-up architectures: Club names Micron in memory and Nvidia in GPUs. Now Marvell in connectivity. Marvell CEO Matt Murphy and Lumentum CEO Michael Hurlston will be on CNBC at 9:15 a.m. ET to discuss the deal. 3. Existential threat: Verizon , AT & T , and T-Mobile all down this morning. SpaceX is in talks to buy Boost Mobile from EchoStar or use the network, the Washington Post reported . The aim? To further Starlink’s efforts to build out its ground infrastructure for a wireless network. Last month, Elon Musk’s company bought up frequency spectrum for $8 billion. 4. Apple earnings tonight. Does it have to be perfect? The Club stock is trading at 36 times forward earnings. This morning, it’s only a few dollars away from last Thursday’s record close. First conference call as CEO for John Ternus. How are device price hikes due to the memory shortage impacting margins? What about the screen problems with the iPhone Duo? Are the iPhone 18 Pro models pulling their weight? 5. OpenAI cut its new funding round to $20 billion from $30 billion, according to the Financial Times. Post-money valuation: $1.25 trillion down from $1.4 trillion. A source told CNBC that the latest round is ongoing and things could change. The possible funding reduction comes as Wall Street is shifting its views on the amount of money companies are raising and borrowing to keep pace on AI. 6. Deutsche Bank upgraded CrowdStrike to buy from hold with a price target of $300, up from $240. Though shares have more than doubled already this year, analysts argued the market still hasn’t fully appreciated what AI will do for cybersecurity demand. Remarkable. Not a cheap stock, but never has been. We remain big believers in CrowdStrike and peer Palo Alto Networks for the Club. 7. Multiple price target boosts for Colgate-Palmolive , with UBS, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America all keeping their buy ratings too. Meanwhile, Evercore upgraded Clorox to hold from sell ahead of Unilever executive Fabian Garcia becoming CEO in January. Within consumer staples, Kimberly-Clark is my preference thanks to the Kenvue acquisition catalyst. 8. Marriott International delivered a third-quarter results beat and raised its full-year earnings guidance. Revenue per available room was up more than 7% in the U.S. and Canada and up over 9% in Asia Pacific (ex-China). Trends in the Middle East saw “meaningfully improvement” versus the second quarter. Travel bull market still intact? Shares are up 3.5%. 9. Another upgrade for Rivian : UBS went to buy from hold on the electric vehicle maker. On Friday, it was Jefferies with the same call. Both firms believe the stock’s recent sell-off created an attractive entry point as Rivian ramps production of its second-generation SUV, known as the R2. UBS called the vehicle a “suitable contender,” saying “manufacturing and supplier execution is likely bigger risk than demand.” 10. On the other hand, another downgrade for Reddit . Loop Capital is the latest. It goes to hold from buy following last week’s earnings blowup. Oppenheimer, KeyBanc and Citizens did so on Friday. Loop argued that shares will face an uphill climb as Reddit navigates the “Google Guillotine” of lost search referral traffic and forces users to log in. After plunging 29% Friday, shares are stable this morning.
