A federal judge from Chattanooga is receiving national recognition for his decades of service.<\/p>\n

The Supreme Court presented U.S. District Judge Curtis L. Collier with the Edward J. Devitt Distinguished Service to Justice Award.<\/p>\n

As Black History Month comes to a close, we want to introduce you one of the most esteemed a\u2026<\/p>\n

The award marks commitment to improving society and upholding the law.<\/p>\n

Judge Collier, who was appointed to the federal bench in 1995 by President Bill Clinton, has held senior status since 2014 and has held a variety of previous seats in federal court governance.<\/p>\n

Prior to his judicial service, he served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General\u2019s Corps, and as an Assistant UnitedStates Attorney in the Eastern District of Louisiana and the Eastern District of Tennessee.<\/p>\n

Chief Justice John Roberts welcomed Collier and gave this statement reported by the Dwight Opperman Foundation:<\/p>\n

“Beyond your courtroom, you have worked tirelessly to improve and strengthen the federal judiciary. Your efforts to mentor future generations of judges and to promote civics education inside and outside the branch have improved public confidence in our federal courts and have strengthened the rule of law. I can think of no judge better suited to carry on Judge Devitt’s legacy.”<\/p>\n

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson also stated that Collier\u2019s award was well-deserved:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou have made history as the first African American federal judge in the Eastern District of Tennessee, and later became the first African American to serve as Chief Judge of the district.\u201d<\/p>\n
