\n\tRebecca Gayheart<\/a> is opening up about Eric Dane<\/a>\u2018s final days timed to the release of the Grey\u2019s Anatomy star\u2019s posthumous memoir, My Book of Days.<\/p>\n

\n\tDane died in February<\/a>, less than a year after announcing his ALS diagnosis.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe actress, who married Dane in 2004 before embarking upon a divorce in 2018 and having that dismissed in 2025, said it didn\u2019t initially dawn on her that the Euphoria actor\u2019s last trip to the hospital would mark the beginning of the end.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe had gone to the hospital so many times before, and they would patch him up, so to speak, and he would come home,\u201d Gayheart said in an interview with Maria Shriver, portions of which aired on Tuesday\u2019s episode of NBC\u2019s Today<\/a>, with additional material posting on Today.com<\/a>. \u201cAnd he\u2019d be OK. And we\u2019d go back to the normal routine, which did change week by week.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAnd that\u2019s how she initially approached his last hospital trip.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI said, \u2018Listen, I\u2019ll be back. I have a dinner. I\u2019m going to this event.\u2019 I had no idea that that was it, that that week was going to be our last week,\u201d Gayheart said. \u201cAnd nor did my daughters. It really took a few days for us to understand the gravity of what that last trip to the hospital meant.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBut after a few days at the hospital, things started to turn serious.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think it was like day three in the hospital where it shifted,\u201d Gayheart said. \u201cEverything shifted. Just the tone of when the doctors were talking to us, and some of the information we were given.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThough Dane knew he was dying, Gayheart was surprised by how fast it happened.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cA lot of people will say, \u2018Well, at least you knew, and you could have those last conversations,\u2019\u201d she said. \u201cBut we didn\u2019t know, because there is no road map. No one can tell you what the journey looks like because it\u2019s so different for every patient.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cHe was becoming more alive mentally, but losing all of his physical abilities. And for the girls, that was really hard to watch as well. But overall, it\u2019s a blur, because it was just so overwhelming.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tStill, the family went ahead with their sleepovers in Dane\u2019s hospital room.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe girls and I just camped out there with him, and we had our family sleepovers,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd we brought in those little candles that aren\u2019t real candles. They have batteries. And we played his favorite music, and we tried to make it as nice as you can be in the hospital room.\u201d<\/p>\n
