Officials have built a cordon around the clutch of eggs, which lie between the shoreline and the boardwalk.

“I can’t believe they’re there. Three days later a second olive ridley laid eggs eight miles south on the sand in Huntington Beach.

With high tides expected to flood the nesting sites and destroy the eggs, federal biologists moved the clutches Sept. 25 to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach. Those eggs are nearing the end of their 45- to 60-day incubation period, and may hatch any day.

There are no plans at the moment to relocate the Ventura clutch, a Fish and Wildlife spokesperson said Monday.

“The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service generally favors minimally intrusive conservation measures,” the agency said in a statement. “For this nest, partners will be protecting and monitoring the Ventura site throughout the 45-60-day incubation period and urge the public to help protect the eggs by keeping a respectful distance.”

Though still listed as a threatened animal under the Endangered Species Act, the olive ridley is one of the more abundant sea turtles.

The small, heart-shaped turtles are normally found throughout tropical regions of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans, with large nesting populations in Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.

Before September, the farthest known northern nest was approximately 700 miles south of Orange County in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur. The Ventura nest now bears that distinction.

Amid record ocean temperatures, a third olive ridley sea turtle has laid its eggs in Southern California —…

[51
330645,275,92241,6753,39713,9585,378714,86601,378713,79,31641,8915,2384,378715,20565,201,51420
post-905141","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wildlife","tag-clutch","tag-day","tag-egg","tag-mile","tag-nicaragua","tag-official","tag-olive-ridley","tag-pacific","tag-rare-sea-turtle-nest","tag-science","tag-southern-california","tag-sunday","tag-time","tag-u-s-fish","tag-ventura","tag-wildlife","tag-wildlife-service
["GET
