If the US midterm elections were a political earthquake, social media was where people came to celebrate, laugh and turn the results into memes. With Democrats pulling off a sweeping victory and taking control of both chambers of Congress, the internet has been having a field day at the expense of US President Donald Trump and the Republican Party.

As the results rolled in, users took to social media with sarcastic posts, political jabs and references to everything from Trump’s foreign policy decisions. Some even suggested that the election outcome was a bigger setback for Trump than his opponents could have imagined.

Here are some of the posts making the rounds:

One user shared an AI-generated video reportedly made by Iran, using a nursery-rhyme-style parody to poke fun at Trump’s electoral setback.

“Well well, seems like Trump got totally outplayed. Democrats have won the US Midterm elections decisively! This AI video made by Iran sums it up!!” the user wrote.

The post continued with a reworked version of the familiar nursery rhyme:

“Trump Trump had a big fall,

From the White House wall,

All his tweets and all his men,

Could not put Trump back again.”

The reference to Trump’s fall quickly captured the mood of the post-election online chatter.

Trump’s trade and diplomatic tensions with India also found their way into the midterm reactions.

“Shouldn’t have picked a fight with India, Trump,” one user wrote, alongside the hashtags #USElections and #USElections2026. The post appeared to link the Republican setback to Trump’s difficult relationship with New Delhi, which has faced friction over trade tariffs and other policy differences.

Another user offered a different interpretation of the election results, arguing that Iran could emerge as an indirect beneficiary of Trump’s political troubles.

“Iran might be the real winner of the US midterm elections. Everyone is debating whether Trump’s party, the Republicans, or the Democrats won the midterms. On paper, Democrats have clearly won the elections. But the real winner might be Iran,” the post read.

One particularly ironic post imagined an entirely different political future for the US president.

“Breaking News: A Tsunami in US Politics! After losing the US midterm elections, Trump says, ‘I will now become the Prime Minister of Israel!’ Is Trump planning to leave America and replace Netanyahu as Israel’s Prime Minister?” the user joked.

Another post took aim at Trump’s foreign policy, using his military actions as the punchline.

“BREAKING – Trump becomes the first US President to lose midterm elections despite bombing more than 9 countries,” the user wrote.

Quick AnswersPowered by"askAsk News18How did social media react to the Republican defeat in the 2026 US midterm elections?

Following the sweeping Democratic victory that secured control of both chambers of Congress, social media users flooded platforms with memes, sarcastic posts, and political jabs targeting Donald Trump and the Republican Party. Viral content included AI-generated satirical videos, ocean wave visuals depicting a Blue Tsunami, and jokes referencing his foreign policy decisions and trade tensions with India.

What factors did voters and analysts point to as causes for the Republican midterm losses?

Voters and analysts attributed the Republican defeat to widespread discontent over a severe economic crisis, soaring living costs, high tariffs on foreign goods, and the US military conflict against Iran, which drove fuel prices up. Exit polls indicated that about 90 percent of voters considered price hikes a major factor, with many blaming Trump’s policies.

What was Donald Trump’s immediate reaction to his party’s defeat in the midterms?

In his first reaction shared on Truth Social, US President Donald Trump claimed that the outcome would have been different if he had personally run, stating that Republicans would have won in a landslide if he was on the ballot. Meanwhile, he and his advisers also sought to deflect responsibility for the setbacks onto other factors.
