Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) called President Donald Trump\u2019s recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin a \u201cdisaster,\u201d claiming that it resulted in the Russian leader getting \u201ceverything he wanted.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThat meeting was a disaster. It was an embarrassment for the United States. It was a failure,\u201d Murphy said Sunday on NBC News\u2019 \u201cMeet the Press.<\/a>\u201d \u201cPutin got everything he wanted. I mean, first of all, he wanted that photo op, right? He wanted to be absolved of his war crimes in front of the world. He was invited to the United States.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Related: In Trump’s Redistricting Push, Democrats Find An Aggressive Identity And Progressives Are On Board<\/a><\/p>\n Trump and Putin met in Anchorage, Alaska, on Aug. 15 for a summit on ending the war in Ukraine, but the high-stakes meeting wrapped up without the pair reaching the ceasefire<\/a>\u00a0Trump was seeking.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Trump, who praised the meeting as a \u201c10 out of 10,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0said following the meeting that now it is \u201creally up to President Zelenskyy to get it done.\u201d Zelenskyy wasn\u2019t invited to the summit.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cWe have a pretty good chance of getting it done,\u201d Trump added. Trump and Zelensky are expected to meet on Monday<\/a> at the Oval Office. Trump has also discussed plans<\/a> to set up a joint meeting between him, Putin and Zelensky.\u00a0<\/p>\n Meanwhile, Putin referred to the meeting as \u201cvery useful<\/a>,\u201d but neither Trump nor Putin mentioned an end to the fighting in Ukraine.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n Murphy went on to tell host Kristen Welker that \u201cwar criminals are not normally invited to the United States of America.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201c[Putin] is intentionally murdering civilians, he\u2019s kidnapping children, and now he got to stand next to the President of the United States, legitimized in the view of the world,\u201d Murphy continued.\u00a0<\/p>\n Related: Trump Claims He Wants To End The Ukraine War. His Call With Putin Did Little To Push Peace.<\/a><\/p>\n Claiming that Putin \u201cdidn\u2019t have to give up anything\u201d during his meeting with Trump, he added, \u201cNothing. Right? President Trump said he wanted a ceasefire. It appears the ceasefire wasn\u2019t even seriously discussed. And then, third, there\u2019s no consequences.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n Related: Trump Has A Stark Warning For Vladimir Putin Ahead Of Their Alaska Meeting<\/a><\/p>\n Murphy continued, \u201cTrump said, \u2018If I don\u2019t get a cease fire, Putin is going to pay a price.\u2019 And then he walked out of that meeting saying, \u2018I didn\u2019t get a cease fire. I didn\u2019t get a peace deal, and I\u2019m not even considering sanctions.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n The politician then pointed to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio\u2019s comments Sunday on ABC\u2019s \u201cThis Week,\u201d in which he admitted \u201c<\/a>we\u2019re still a long ways off<\/a>\u201d<\/a> from a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia after the meeting flopped between Trump and Putin.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cYou heard Secretary Rubio downplay sanctions.
