The Athletic\u2019s Laurie Whitwell has dropped a huge update on Manchester United<\/a>\u2019s search for a possible replacement for Michael Carrick as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Red Devils directors enjoy their human shield.<\/p>\n

Many assumed Carrick was done after the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth at Old Trafford followed the 4-1 Champions League humiliation at the hands of Como<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But crisis talks between Sir Jim Ratcliffe, Jason Wilcox, Christopher Vivell and Omar Berrada granted him a \u2018stay of execution\u2019.<\/p>\n

The blame for the 2-0 defeat to Chelsea could be laid almost entirely at the door of Lisandro Martinez, which meant no change of tack was necessary \u2013 they would wait for the international break to make a decision on his future.<\/p>\n

The 3-2 comeback win over Roma<\/a> has eased the tension at Manchester United and the pressure on Carrick.<\/p>\n

And although Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann are thought to be the frontrunners him, Whitwell has revealed that they\u2019re not \u201cadvancing\u201d in talks with alternatives, hinting that Carrick\u2019s \u201cgot the job\u201d for an extended period.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey [United chiefs] decided to give him to the international break, a chance to turn things around,\u201d he said on the Stretford Paddock YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot to say they\u2019d make a change during the break, but to reassess at that point\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not aware of anything advancing with any other candidates, even in just honing in on potential successors.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would suggest that Carrick\u2019s got the job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if the fans\u2019 support for Carrick is impacting the decisions made by the club hierarchy, Whitwell suggested Ratcliffe, Wilcox and Omar Berrada are reticent to remove a man shielding them somewhat from criticism.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cI would say that ultimately the supporters\u2019 reactions is feeding into what they do.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they take Carrick out of this situation then there\u2019s nowhere else to go but to the people making the calls and we\u2019ve seen the animosity in the two home games.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat would point the spotlight solely on the people making the changes and I think that does come into it.\u201d<\/p>\n

On whether Wilcox and Berrada are to blame for United\u2019s poor work in the summer transfer market, Whitwell added: \u201cWilcox and Berrarda clearly had to work to a budget. You can\u2019t get away from that, and [they] aren\u2019t the ones saying we\u2019ve got this amount of money to spend.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s in the context of the football club \u2013 the Glazer debt, recruitment being bad prior to this point.<\/p>\n
