{"id":90951,"date":"2025-08-18T03:26:07","date_gmt":"2025-08-18T03:26:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/90951\/"},"modified":"2025-08-18T03:26:07","modified_gmt":"2025-08-18T03:26:07","slug":"fundraiser-community-interest-meeting-held-for-new-liberation-station-bookstore-wral-com","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/90951\/","title":{"rendered":"Fundraiser, community interest meeting held for new Liberation Station bookstore :: WRAL.com"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s been a long journey for Liberation Station.<\/p>\n<p>The Black-owned children\u2019s book store in Raleigh closed its downtown location in 2024, a year after it opened, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/story\/black-owned-children-s-bookstore-in-raleigh-moving-after-threats-owner-says\/21358758\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">following a barrage of threats aimed at both its owner and the children who would visit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, there\u2019s hope for a new chapter in the story.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the bookstore hosted a community interest meeting in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wral.com\/news\/local\/raleigh-liberation-station-reopen-montague-plaza-juneteenth-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Montague Plaza<\/a>, where the bookstore is slated to reopen in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday was our first community interest meeting, having the opportunity to engage our community, to show them our vision,\u201d said Victoria Scott-Miller, owner of Liberation Station.<\/p>\n<p>Part of Sunday\u2019s event was to help raise more money for the bookstore. According to Scott-Miller, the bookstore has already raised $30,000.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve reached $30,000 in 30 days, so we only have $30,000 to go,\u201d Scott-Miller said.<\/p>\n<p>This Liberation Station, Scott-Miller says, will be different, as Sunday\u2019s meeting was to gauge what southeast Raleigh wants from the new space.<\/p>\n<p>Montague Plaza is dedicated to housing Black-owned businesses, and the new location will give Liberation Station 15,000 square feet of possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat programs do they enjoy, what type of curation of books would they like?\u201d Scott-Miller said.<\/p>\n<p>Gary Freeman, a Raleigh native with two daughters, said he hopes to bring book reading with other dads to the store.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think what she\u2019s doing is amazing,\u201d Freeman said. \u201cBeing able to see that happen on a regular basis to build community, specifically with Black fathers in the area, that\u2019s something I\u2019m really excited about in this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In July, Scott-Miller said they plan to expand programming to include story times and author workshops with kids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Making the bookstore\u2019s planned Juneteenth 2026 opening a reality, however, is going to take time, as the bookstore needs to meet its fundraising goals.<\/p>\n<p>Scott-Miller said she\u2019s looking forward to turning the page and letting her dream sing out once again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an encouraging turnaround, especially during such a volatile time that people can see the vision and importance in investing children of color education,\u201d Scott-Miller said.<\/p>\n<p>Scott-Miller told WRAL News she plans to hold another community meeting at the start of 2026.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It\u2019s been a long journey for Liberation Station.
