Former US ambassador to NATO Nicholas Burns has cautioned that any lasting peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine must not depend on the word of President Vladimir Putin. Burns stressed that Putin \u201cnever meets his promises\u201d and argued that security guarantees will be vital to ensure Moscow upholds its commitments.<\/p>\n
Speaking ahead of high-level meetings in Washington, Burns underlined the importance of sustained pressure from both the United States and European allies. He pointed to a security force framework led by Britain and France as a critical safeguard for Ukraine\u2019s future. \u201cThat\u2019s why this security force is so important for the future, and it\u2019s encouraging to see European leaders engaged today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
At the White House, US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are set to meet more than half a dozen European leaders, including those of the UK, France, Italy, Germany, as well as the EU and NATO chiefs.
