(34%) of UK workers last year, with 91% experiencing acute periods of both at at least one point. <\/p>\n<p>That raises the risk of burnout, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/v\" target=\"_blank\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Mental Health UK says\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68a32c2ae4b0858c76431bbf\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"\/v\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"feed\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mental Health UK says<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>No wonder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.co.uk\/entry\/quit-cracking-work-signs_uk_685e833fe4b0bb5045005553\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-internal-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"experts say we\u2019re seeing a rise\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68a32c2ae4b0858c76431bbf\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"685e833fe4b0bb5045005553\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"buzz\" data-vars-type=\"web_internal_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">experts say we\u2019re seeing a rise<\/a> in \u201cquiet cracking,\u201d or a slow but certain disconnect from work that happens when employees are burnt out.<\/p>\n<p>If that sounds like you, though, the \u201c43 rule\u201d \u2013 which sees workers optimise their annual leave to the best of its science-backed abilities \u2013 might help. <\/p>\n<p>What is \u201cthe 43 rule\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>A 2025 paper published in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bps.org.uk\/research-digest\/holiday-benefits-last-longer-we-thought\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Journal of Applied Psychology\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68a32c2ae4b0858c76431bbf\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.bps.org.uk\/research-digest\/holiday-benefits-last-longer-we-thought\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"3\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Journal of Applied Psychology<\/a> found that the benefits of holidays on our wellbeing last at least 21 days \u2015 and maybe longer. <\/p>\n<p>In fact, the researchers found, the positive effects might linger for as long as 43 days (holidays which combined time at home with time away seemed to give longer-lasting results). <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stylist.co.uk\/life\/careers\/43-rule-annual-leave-hack\/1008549\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Speaking to Stylist\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68a32c2ae4b0858c76431bbf\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.stylist.co.uk\/life\/careers\/43-rule-annual-leave-hack\/1008549\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Speaking to Stylist<\/a>, business and coaching psychologist Hazel Anderson-Turner suggested that using that research to plan your breaks could result in happier, less burnt-out workers. <\/p>\n<p>It could also be a great way to beat \u201choliday hoarding\u201d \u2015 the accumulation of untaken days off that led <a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplemanagement.co.uk\/article\/1916961\/holiday-hoarding-%E2%80%93-why-so-workers-doing-it\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"just under two-thirds of UK employees \" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68a32c2ae4b0858c76431bbf\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.peoplemanagement.co.uk\/article\/1916961\/holiday-hoarding-%E2%80%93-why-so-workers-doing-it\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"5\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">just under two-thirds of UK employees <\/a>to leave time off on the table last year.<\/p>\n<p>As Margaret Lewis, CEO at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheffieldmind.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" js-entry-link cet-external-link\" data-vars-item-name=\"Sheffield Mind\" data-vars-item-type=\"text\" data-vars-unit-name=\"68a32c2ae4b0858c76431bbf\" data-vars-unit-type=\"buzz_body\" data-vars-target-content-id=\"https:\/\/www.sheffieldmind.co.uk\/\" data-vars-target-content-type=\"url\" data-vars-type=\"web_external_link\" data-vars-subunit-name=\"article_body\" data-vars-subunit-type=\"component\" data-vars-position-in-subunit=\"6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Sheffield Mind<\/a>, said: \u201cHoliday hoarding may be related to anxiety, the idea that we might need that time off to deal with an emergency, or that we\u2019ll be judged by colleagues and management if we book annual leave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it can lead to burnout \u2013 and that\u2019s no good for the individual or the organisation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Does it have to be 43 days exactly?<\/p>\n<p>No \u2013 that\u2019s just a good guideline for telling when you might become burnt out, or are in need of a break. <\/p>\n<p>But there are other signs too,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stylist.co.uk\/life\/careers\/43-rule-annual-leave-hack\/1008549\" target=\"_blank\" role=\"link\" class=\" To protect our people and business performance, wellbeing cannot be an afterthought; it must be built into the core of how companies operate. Encouraging staff to take regular holidays is a huge part of this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t just mean a once in a blue moon reminder to take a break. Words must be backed up by action.
