Daniel Jones is getting a second shot as a starter.<\/p>\n
The Colts named<\/a> the ex-Giants quarterback as their starter on Tuesday following an offseason battle against Anthony Richardson, the team\u2019s fourth overall pick in 2023.<\/p>\n \u201cHe\u2019s the starting quarterback for the season,\u201d Colts coach Shane Steichen said Tuesday. \u201cI don\u2019t want to have a short leash on that.\u201d<\/p>\n Daniel Jones will start for the Colts in Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season. Getty Images<\/p>\n A first-round pick by the Giants in 2019, Jones spent a rollercoaster five-and-a-half seasons in New York before being released by the team<\/a> last November.<\/p>\n The breaking point came after a putrid 2-8 start to the franchise\u2019s celebratory 100th season.<\/p>\n Through 80 regular-season appearances with the Giants, Jones tossed 78 touchdowns against 54 interceptions for 16,652 yards. He added 17 touchdowns on the ground.<\/p>\n The 28-year-old quarterback finished the 2024 season with the Vikings \u2014 mostly on the practice squad \u2014 before signing a one-year, $14 million contract with the Colts in free agency.<\/p>\n Daniel Jones spent five-and-a-half seasons with the Giants before being released in November 2024. Mitch Stringer-Imagn Images<\/p>\n In two preseason appearances for Indianapolis, Jones hasn\u2019t thrown a touchdown or an interception.<\/p>\n He got off to a shaky start<\/a> in training camp, with The New York Times reporting the former Duke product and Richardson, 23, struggled \u201cto find a rhythm\u201d in late July.<\/p>\n Richardson has not played a full NFL season, largely due to injuries and inconsistent play.<\/p>\n Anthony Richardson in action against the Jets in November 2024. AP<\/p>\n He was sidelined<\/a> for much of his rookie season in 2023 after undergoing season-ending shoulder surgery that October.<\/p>\n Richardson appeared in 11 games during his sophomore campaign, famously tapping out during a Week 8 loss to the Texans<\/a> because he needed a break.<\/p>\n
