NKY residents can freely recycle their used lithium batteries at several firehouses throughout the region. <\/p>\n

Managed through the Cincinnati Recycling and Reuse Hub and partially funded by Rumpke, the program aims to help residents in both Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati safely dispose of lithium batteries.<\/p>\n

\u201cLithium batteries are becoming more prevalent,<\/a>\u201d said Jeff Snyder, senior vice president of recycling at Rumpke, in a press release. \u201cAnd when these batteries reach the end of their life, people don\u2019t know what to do with them, so they toss them into their trash or recycling container, which leads to fires in our trucks and our facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n

A five-year study from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission<\/a>, reported over 25,000 lithium-ion battery fires throughout the country in the study period. The yearly cost of commercial lithium battery fires in the U.S. is $15.9 billion.<\/p>\n

The following firehouses in Northern Kentucky will serve as drop-off locations:<\/p>\n

Drop offs only collect lithium batteries. Other kinds of batteries, including car batteries, will not be accepted. <\/p>\n
