But now even top earners are <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/10\/12\/millionaire-frugal-living-life-warren-buffett-mitzi-purdue\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2023\/10\/12\/millionaire-frugal-living-life-warren-buffett-mitzi-purdue\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 kuWizV\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">feeling the pinch<\/a> in a cost-of-living crisis, and sparkly $100,000 salaries have lost their shine.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 60% of six-figure earners no longer feel financially successful, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/clarifycapital.com\/the-new-well-off\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/clarifycapital.com\/the-new-well-off\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 kuWizV\">recent report<\/a> from Clarify Capital. Women were slightly more likely than men to answer this way at that income level, with 60% saying they don\u2019t feel like they\u2019re thriving monetarily compared to 56% of their male counterparts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And now, for these high-paid professionals to feel comfortable with their finances, they have to bring in a staggering $500,000\u2014the most common figure chosen by 24% of six-figure earners. Unfortunately, these sky-high salaries are not easy to come by. Only one in 127 jobs in the U.S. pays $500,000 or more, representing about 0.8% of roles, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adpresearch.com\/high-paying-jobs-theyre-a-dime-a-dozen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.adpresearch.com\/high-paying-jobs-theyre-a-dime-a-dozen\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 kuWizV\">an analysis<\/a> from ADP.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The surging <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/01\/six-figure-salary-workers-cost-of-living-crisis-housing-budget-grocery-stores-travel-personal-finance-anxiety\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/08\/01\/six-figure-salary-workers-cost-of-living-crisis-housing-budget-grocery-stores-travel-personal-finance-anxiety\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 kuWizV\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cost of living<\/a> is driving financial unease across the board; about 85% of six-figure earners said they feel stressed and anxious due <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/01\/24\/donald-trump-inflation-cost-of-living-federal-reserve-jay-powell-interest-rates-wef-davos\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2025\/01\/24\/donald-trump-inflation-cost-of-living-federal-reserve-jay-powell-interest-rates-wef-davos\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 kuWizV\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">to rising prices<\/a>, according to the Clarify Capital report. And highly curated, idealized luxury lifestyles flaunted on social media aren\u2019t helping the situation. Many top earners report feeling lifestyle envy and pressure to keep up, with Gen Z (79%) and women (63%) being the most likely to be impacted.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn today\u2019s economy, income alone doesn\u2019t guarantee financial peace of mind. High earners are feeling squeezed by inflation, stressed by social pressure, and more mindful about what it really means to be well-off,\u201d the Clarify Capital <a href=\"https:\/\/clarifycapital.com\/the-new-well-off\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/clarifycapital.com\/the-new-well-off\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 kuWizV\">report notes<\/a>. \u201cAs spending habits shift and priorities change, one thing is clear: real wealth is about security, not just status.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The financial comfort dilemma: rising food and rent costs, inflation anxiety, and devalued assets\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Just 20 years ago, what it meant to be \u201crich\u201d doesn\u2019t even come close to the salary that six-figure earners need today to simply feel comfortable.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2005, the income needed to be classed as upper class was $169,800 annually, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/was-salary-required-be-upper-middle-class-2005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nasdaq.com\/articles\/was-salary-required-be-upper-middle-class-2005\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 kuWizV\">analyzed by<\/a> the Nasdaq\u2014a staggering $330,000 less than what top-earners say they need today to feel financially settled amid raging living costs.<\/p>\n<p>Food prices are so high that seven in 10 six-figure earners are now being forced to shop at discount grocery stores to save on daily essentials, according to the Clarify Capital report. And housing is a whole other issue; rent is up more than 25% since 2020, rising fastest for lower-priced homes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/28\/business\/economy\/inflation-wages-pay-salaries.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/28\/business\/economy\/inflation-wages-pay-salaries.html\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 kuWizV\">according to<\/a> the Consumer Price Index.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Living has become so costly that nearly a quarter of Americans said <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/11\/cost-of-living-crisis-gen-z-homeless-acorns-money-matters\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2024\/05\/11\/cost-of-living-crisis-gen-z-homeless-acorns-money-matters\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 kuWizV\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">they\u2019re actively worried<\/a> that the state of their finances could lead to homelessness, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acorns.com\/learn\/acorns\/money-matters-report-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.acorns.com\/learn\/acorns\/money-matters-report-2024\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 kuWizV\">a 2024<\/a> report from Acorns. And young people are feeling the strain in particular\u2014about a third of Gen Z and millennials expressed the concern, compared to just 11% of boomers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe everyday American is facing a deluge of bad financial news, from persistent increases in inflation to cost of living, all against a backdrop of global war and turmoil,\u201d Noah Kerner, CEO of Acorns, wrote <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acorns.com\/learn\/acorns\/money-matters-report-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.acorns.com\/learn\/acorns\/money-matters-report-2024\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 kuWizV\">in the report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But even older Americans, with a lifetime of savings at their disposal, aren\u2019t sitting pretty in the current U.S. economy. About 92% of retirees said they are worried about inflation lessening the value of their assets\u2014the top concern listed\u2014and an increase from 89% in 2024, according to a 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/article\/inflation-top-worry-retirees\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/article\/inflation-top-worry-retirees\/\" class=\"sc-19cc8fd2-0 kuWizV\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study from<\/a> Schroders.
