That can be good \u2026 or bad for the world\u2019s carbon budget,\u201d this older article offers a quick overview, with sections for China\u2019s big vision, likely problems down the road, and what to keep an eye on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/06\/30\/climate\/china-clean-energy-power.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">There\u2019s a race to power the future. China is pulling away.<\/a>\u201d David Gelles, Somini Sengupta, Keith Bradsher, and Brad Plumer, the New York Times, June 2025. Announced as the first in a series, this excellent article focuses on how both China and the U.S. are acting in what they see as their nation\u2019s geopolitical interests, with illuminating graphics. If you only read one piece from this collection, this is a good choice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/auto-shanghai-2025-car-show-warning-to-the-west\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Auto Shanghai 2025 wasn\u2019t just a car show. It was a warning to the West<\/a>.\u201d Alistair Charlton, Wired, May 2025. This review is lively, informative, and both humbling and envy-inducing for American readers. Section title: \u201cThings sure have changed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How did China begin to pull ahead in renewable energy?<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainabilitybynumbers.com\/p\/china-cheap-solar-batteries\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Why are solar panels and batteries from China so cheap?<\/a>\u201d Hannah Ritchie, Sustainability by Numbers, May 2025. This piece is quite readable and of general interest; it also addresses common misconceptions about China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-solutions\/2025\/03\/03\/china-renewable-energy-green-world-leader\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How China came to dominate the world in renewable energy<\/a>.\u201d Christian Shepherd and Jinpeng Li, Washington Post, March 2025. Well done; clear and startling graphics; focused on economics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/e360.yale.edu\/features\/china-renewable-energy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">How China became the world\u2019s leader on renewable energy<\/a>.\u201d Isabel Hilton, Yale Environment 360, March 2024. Although China\u2019s fast progress makes this article a bit outdated, it offers some interesting backstory. Its author was the founder and former editor of the China Dialog website, now the rich, relevant, and very searchable site <a href=\"https:\/\/dialogue.earth\/en\/climate\/introducing-dialogue-earth\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dialog Earth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What might China\u2019s emergence as a renewable energy powerhouse mean for Americans? Opinion columns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/07\/14\/opinion\/china-shock-economy-manufacturing.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">We warned about the first China shock. Subtitle: \u201cOn many fronts, Trump is inadvertently aiding China\u2019s anti-American dictatorship.\u201d Focus on the tariffs as of August 4, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Deeper dives<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.volts.wtf\/p\/whats-going-on-with-china-these-days\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What\u2019s going on with China these days?<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.volts.wtf\/p\/what-the-feoc\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">What the FEOC?\u201d<\/a> David Roberts (Volts) interviewing China energy guru Lauri Myllyvirta (April 2024) and U.S. policy specialists Jake Higdon and Isabel Munilla (August 2025). Both are illuminating discussions with expert insiders. FEOC stands for \u201cforeign entity of concern,\u201d and it\u2019s an important and unclear category for U.S. energy policy, especially as regards tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>To stay up to date on what\u2019s happening in China on the energy and carbon scene, you can follow the extensive bi-weekly summaries and links in the newsletter China Briefing from the folks at Carbon Brief.
