{"id":99348,"date":"2025-08-21T12:57:23","date_gmt":"2025-08-21T12:57:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/99348\/"},"modified":"2025-08-21T12:57:23","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T12:57:23","slug":"nearly-20-of-canadian-small-businesses-may-close-from-tariffs-cfib-says-national","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/99348\/","title":{"rendered":"Nearly 20% of Canadian small businesses may close from tariffs, CFIB says &#8211; National"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly 20 per cent of Canadian small businesses are at risk of having to shut down in as little as six months as owners grapple with higher costs brought on by <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/tariffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">tariffs<\/a>, new data suggests.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/70c8fc80.png\" alt=\"\" style=\"position:absolute;width:1px;height:1px\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmall businesses don\u2019t have a lot of runway left. They are trying their best to absorb the costs, but if nothing changes, they will be forced to make some tough decisions,\u201d said Corinne Pohlmann, executive vice-president at the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe worst outcome for Canada in the trade war is a bad deal, but the second-worst outcome is the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11318656\/donald-trump-tariffs-mark-carney-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">never-ending uncertainty<\/a> small business owners have been wrestling with for the past six months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the CFIB, nearly one in five (19 per cent) of small business owners report they won\u2019t last more than six months if the tariff status quo remains, and nearly four in 10 (38 per cent) said they would last less than a year.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>United States President <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/tag\/Donald-Trump-Tariffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Donald Trump sparked a trade war<\/a> earlier this year by imposing tariff policies on virtually all countries, including Canada, which also led to counter-tariff measures.<\/p>\n<p>Although many goods listed under the current trade agreement, known as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.international.gc.ca\/trade-commerce\/trade-agreements-accords-commerciaux\/agr-acc\/cusma-aceum\/index.aspx?lang=eng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA),<\/a> are exempt from most tariffs, there are still many goods that businesses have to pay more for due to these new tariffs.<\/p>\n<p>Other <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11331101\/china-canada-tariffs-canola\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">trade tensions between Canada and China<\/a> have also meant higher costs tariffs\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>One of the ways businesses are staying afloat is by \u201cabsorbing\u201d the higher costs from tariffs, <a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11292901\/business-sentiment-bank-of-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">as noted by the Bank of Canada in July<\/a>\u00a0following the release of its latest survey of business and consumer sentiments.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTariff-related cost increases are also putting upward pressure on firms\u2019 expected selling prices,\u201d the Bank of Canada said in its survey summary.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"170\" height=\"225\" loading=\"lazy\" happen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause customers are sensitive to price increases, many firms are absorbing a portion of these increased costs, compressing their profit margins in an effort to preserve market share.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The data from the CFIB suggests that may not be an option for much longer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a breaking point, and I think we\u2019re coming to that breaking point where some of them (small business owners) are saying, \u2018I just can\u2019t continue to absorb this and stay competitive \u2014 it\u2019s just becoming too difficult,&#8217;\u201d Pohlmann economy amid the trade war.<\/p>\n<p>Story continues below advertisement<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/globalnews.ca\/news\/11331011\/2025-federal-budget-consultations-underway\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">focus of these spending promises<\/a> has been mainly on the housing, industry and energy sectors, but there hasn\u2019t been as much clarity on supports specific to small business owners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s many different suggestions we\u2019re making to the government on how they can do this. It could be something along the lines of a rebate to many small businesses impacted.
