The revamped mixed doubles competition commenced on Tuesday and Iga Swiatek<\/a> went for glory alongside Casper Ruud.<\/p>\n They managed to reach the final, but Swiatek was denied the chance of winning two trophies in as many days.<\/p>\n After breezing through their first two matches, Swiatek and Ruud defeated Jessica Pegula and Jack Draper<\/a> in the US Open<\/a> mixed doubles semi-finals.<\/p>\n They lost the first set before coming back to win two epic tiebreaks to clinch the match and reach the final.<\/p>\n Swiatek sealed the win with a sumptuous volley, the likes of which she does not often play during her singles matches.<\/p>\n The world number two enjoyed the shot so much that she described it as one she will never forget during the post-match interview.<\/p>\n \u201cI think the last point I played the most important volley of my life,\u201d Swiatek said. \u201cIt\u2019s not like I have played them a lot. So I\u2019ll remember it forever.\u201d<\/p>\n After outlasting Pegula and Draper, Swiatek and Ruud reached the US Open mixed doubles final.<\/p>\n Their opponents were the defending champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, and it was another close battle.<\/p>\n The Italian duo took the opening set, before Swiatek and Ruud bounced back to send the match into a deciding 10-point tiebreak. It was the experienced doubles team that emerged victorious and successfully defended their title.<\/p>\n \u201cI guess doubles players are better tactically than singles players,\u201d six-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek admitted post-match.<\/p>\n \u201cI want to thank the tournament for the opportunity for us to play when we could. We always focus on singles but now we had the opportunity to play mixed together.<\/p>\n \u201cI really enjoyed it. Thanks Casper for texting me. I guess we agreed on that, who started it. I always had a huge amount of respect for you. You know that.
