It’s AFL’s night of nights but the Brownlow Medal is just as much about the fashion and the wild antics as it is about the prestigious award count.

From plunging necklines to risqué fashion choices, the WAGs have always made a name for themselves for stealing the limelight with their choices.

And while many dress to impress, over the years some have often missed the mark, opting for bold designs rather than elegant ensembles.

From Tania Buckley’s G-string dress to Brynne Edelsten’s unique outfit choices, Daily Mail takes a glance back at some of the boldes red carpet looks to date.

Back in 2001, Tania sparked a media storm after walking the Brownlow Medal carpet in a risqué G-string dress that left little to the imagination.

The blonde beauty raised eyebrows when she arrived at the event partially exposing her bottom in a daring soft pink frock.

The iconic dress featured a sequinned G-string intentionally attached to the base of Tania’s back.

In 2019, Tania told The Herald Sun she’d been criticised for years simply for wearing the daring gown.

‘I wouldn’t wish it on anybody,’ she said.

Brynne Edelsten, former wife of the late Geoffrey Edelsten, has also made headlines over the years for her figure-hugging, elaborate and risqué fashion choices.

From black and pink lace minis and renaissance-inspired corset numbers to mirror-embellished bodices and plunging necklines, Brynne has never failed to trigger a little controversy on the red carpet.

Edelsten’s fiancée Gabi Grecko has also taken the red carpet fashion code to new levels with her increasingly outrageous and theatrical pieces.

In 2014, the American model made sure all eyes were on her in a perilously low-cut embellished black number with a split so high it threatened to expose her modesty.

The front of her dress featured a plunging neckline almost cut to her navel, revealing her ample cleavage.

The controversy continued in 2010 and 2011 She wore cleavage-baring gowns, over-the-top sequins and barely-there skirts

The same year Renee Enright, wife of Geelong Football Club’s Corey Enright, also suffered a fashion fail.

Despite being a personal stylist, she rocked up on the red carpet in an unusual white trouser suit.

Shunning a gown unlike the rest of the WAGs, the brunette wore a plunging jacket with embellished, flared bottoms which were too long for the slender beauty.

In 2003, Fiona Mills shocked as she arrived in a gown embellished with patches from each team.

In 2015, Taylor Wilson, the partner of Collingwood’s Dane Swan, dared in a sheer skirt worn over a leotard to show off her leg tattoo.

Also joining the list is Andrew McLeod’s wife Rachel McLeod, who arrived for the 2006 red carpet with an interesting ’23’ on the back.

In 2018, Jarryn Geary’s partner Emma Giles made a bold statement in a plunging white number with bizarre pleated detailing around the bottom.

But it’s not only the fashion that has made headlines over the years.

Brendan Fevola infamously interviewed players and WAGs while heavily intoxicated at the 2009 Brownlow Medal count.

The former Carlton and Brisbane star, who was working for Channel Nine’s AFL Footy Show at the time, pretended to attack then-Carlton superstar Chris Judd, made sexual jokes to his partner Bec, kissed Sydney Swans midfielder Ryan O’Keefe and snapped at the condescension of James Hird.

He left Carlton shortly after the fallout, and was temporarily banned from appearing on the Grand Final Footy Show.

In 2009, Brendan revealed how his antics ruined the Brownlow Medal for attendees over the years.

‘For the last nine years they have not been able to serve alcohol at a rapid rate that they used to,’ Brendan said on his FOX 101.9FM Fifi, Fev and Byron show.

He said every year he gets messages from fellow footballers who are unhappy about the new arrangement.

‘They say ‘You p***k!’ They hate me,’ he explained.

The network created a rotating fashion pod where wives and partners could show off every inch of their gown.

It was widely slammed for objectifying women and was axed after one year.

The wife of late Jim Stynes, Samantha said at the time: ‘How do the WAGs stand a chance when asked to display themselves on a giant lazy susan?’
