An iconic footwear brand has announced all its stores across Australia will shut for good after a quarter of a century in business.

Famous Footwear informed customers it was closing down in a shock announcement shared to its social media pages on Monday. 

The retailer, which has been operating for 25 years, explained its online store will close on December 31. 

The brand’s 17 stores, located across NSW, Queensland and Victoria, are set to close in early 2026. 

Famous Footwear made the announcement about its closure in an Instagram post along with the caption: ‘The end of an era.’

‘It’s with sadness we announce the end of our journey,’ the statement read.

‘Famous Footwear will be closing permanently, with our online store open until December 31.

‘We loved helping you find your famous fit for more than 25 years. We’re truly grateful for the loyalty and support from our community over the years.’

The retailer was popular among customers as it sold women’s shoes at affordable prices.

Customers shared their devastation online, with some claiming the store’s closure was a sign of the ‘grim reality’ facing many Australian businesses.  

‘As a small business owner watching big companies go down, just really show us all such a grim reality. I hope something changes soon!’ one person wrote. 

‘I know Big W is really struggling. I hope we don’t lose them next.’

‘Where do I go for my shoes now? Will miss your store,’ a second person commented.

‘No! You guys were so good such comfortable shoes and such a reasonable price this is sad,’ a third person chimed. 

A fourth added: ‘So sad! You guys to me were the only brand at the time that I found size 5 heels, boots for my small feet’, while another person wrote: ‘No way! My fav place to buy shoes’. 

Famous Footwear also announced a closing-down-sale, with customers given a further 30 per cent off on items.

‘Shop our last sale ever. Stock is limited and once it’s gone, it’s gone,’ the brand wrote.
