A shallow earthquake has hit the Macquarie Island region for the second time in just as many days. 

The 6.2 magnitude quake struck the Southern Ocean, 1,500km southeast of Tasmania, at 4.15pm on Saturday. 

It was recorded at a depth of 10 km, according to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre.

There is a low likelihood of casualties or damage to buildings and no tsunami threat has been issued.

Another 6.2 magnitude earthquake previously struck the region at 11.22am on Friday.
