A search for a swimmer who disappeared off Sydney‘s shoreline has been suspended until the morning amid rough weather.Â
The swimmer, believed to be a man in his 30s, was reported missing after failing to return to shore at the southern end of Maroubra Beach, south of Coogee, shortly before 4pm on Sunday.
Volunteers and vessels from Marine Rescue Botany Port Hacking and Marine Rescue Middle Harbour assisted water police in searching the area.
However, they were forced to suspend operations at 5.30pm due to poor conditions.
The search will resume at first light on Monday.Â
‘Conditions are not favourable offshore this afternoon, with choppy seas and squally rain showers,’ Marine Rescue NSWÂ Inspector Andrew Harding said.
The alarm was first raised by lifesavers who noticed the man enter the water but did not return to shore.Â
The beach was evacuated as a precaution and multiple helicopters and jet-skis were brought in to assist the search. They are expected to be redeployed on Monday.
