If you want to do your strength training from the comfort of your home, then you’re going to need a full set of dumbbells to get a full workout. That’s great if you have room in your house for a home gym, but what if you don’t have the space for racks of dumbbells? Adjustable dumbbells offer a solution. A single set of adjustable weights can be adjusted from 5 pounds to 60 pounds or more, in increments as small as 2.5 pounds, effectively putting 15 or more sets of dumbbells into a single set.

Adjustable dumbbells even have adjustment mechanisms that make changing the weight quick and easy, so you can circuit train without missing a beat. While adjustable weights are a great alternative to a full set of weights, they can vary in ease of use, weight range, build quality and price. Ahead, we break down everything you need to consider when shopping for a set of adjustable weights while also offering our top picks.

How we decided on the best adjustable dumbbells

I’ve used various types of traditional and adjustable dumbbells over the years, so I’m familiar with what works and what doesn’t work. I used this experience, along with extensive research, to compare specs and comb through user reviews, making my selections. All of my selections come from brands with reputations for making quality dumbbells and take into account durability, ease of use, and price. My selections include budget-priced models as well as high-end dumbbells for more serious weight lifters.

NordicTrack 55 lb Select-a-Weight Dumbbell Pair, Black

NordicTrack’s select-a-weight adjustable dumbbells hit that sweet spot between quality and price. The weights range from 10 to 55 pounds, with 15 increments from 2.5 to 5 pounds, so they can accommodate a variety of ability levels and allow for smaller increases as you build strength.

The set also has one of the smoother systems for changing weights. With the dumbbell sitting in its cradle, simply pull up the pin and slide it to whatever weight amount you want. It takes seconds, which is great if you’re circuit training and need to move quickly from one exercise to the next. There’s also knurling on the steel handles that allows you to get a solid grip on these weights.

While we like the build quality, there is a fair amount of plastic used with the Select-A-Weights, which is understandable given that they cost about half as much as some premium adjustable weights.

While the 55 may be great for many users, it won’t accommodate heavier lifters. There are adjustable weights that can go up to 90 pounds.

Specs:

Weight range: 10 to 55 pounds per dumbbell (starter kit)

Increments: 15, ranging from 2.5 to 5 pounds

Dimensions (L x W x H): 19.4 inches x 11.4 inches x 8.5 inches

What we like:

The pin system is fast and easy to use, and knurling on handles adds grip.

What we don’t like:

They have more plastic parts than pricier adjustable dumbbell sets, and the top weight isn’t enough for heavier lifters.

Brandt Ranj

The DB1s are notable for their no-frills design. There are no batteries, apps, or digital components, making them a reliable, low-maintenance choice. They’re also compact and storable, making them ideal for small spaces or home gyms with limited room.

While they support long-term, steady fitness progress, they don’t offer smart tracking or shortcuts. Heavier lifters may also find the 52.5-pound max limiting compared to higher-end adjustable dumbbells.

Specs:

Weight range: 5 to 52.5 pounds per dumbbell

Increments: 2.5 pounds

Adjustment system: Dial-based

What we like:

Quick, intuitive dial system and compact, space-saving design

What we don’t like:

No smart features and max weight may not be enough for heavier lifters

Core Fitness® Adjustable Dumbbell Weight Set by Affordable Dumbbells

A simple, easy-to-use design and affordable price make the Core Fitness adjustable dumbbells very user-friendly. The standout feature of this set of dumbbells is its adjustable system. All you need to do is simply twist the handle to change the weight, and the operation takes seconds. The Core Fitness dumbbells are also more compact than other adjustable dumbbells we’ve seen, which makes them not just easier to use but also easier to store.

There are concessions with the Core Fitness Adjustable dumbbells weight set. They’re limited by a max load of 50 pounds and only adjust in 5-pound increments. The Core Fitness adjustable dumbbells also have a very annoying tendency to stick to the cradle when lifted. They also have a rubberized handle rather than a knurled one, which may not appeal to some.

Specs:

Weight range: 5 to 50 pounds per dumbbell

Increments: 5 pounds

Dimensions (L x W x H): 14.5 inches x 7.9 inches x 7.5 inches

What we like:

They have the easiest weight adjustment system of any adjustable dumbbells we’ve seen. They’re also more compact than most adjustable dumbbell sets and very affordably priced.

What we don’t like:

The dumbbells are limited to a max of 50 pounds and sometimes stick to the cradle.

REP Fitness Adjustable Dumbbell Set - QuickDraw, Multiple Weight Ranges, Non-Slip Grip

Rep Fitness’s dumbbells are built to last a lifetime. Literally. They come with a Lifetime warranty, which isn’t something you’ll find with most adjustable dumbbell manufacturers. Not that you’ll need to make a claim. REP Fitness’s testing process for these dumbbells involved dropping them off a rooftop 100,000 times. Along with being near indestructible, they’re also easy to use. Switching between weights involves releasing and locking switches, which is quick and easy. Increments range from 2.5 to 5 pounds using micro-adjustment plates. REP sells 30-, 40-, 50-, and 60-pound options, which should be good for most, but may not be enough for heavier lifters. While we love the durability of these weights, they do get somewhat bulky at higher weights, measuring more than 18 inches wide. While REP Fitness’s adjustable dumbbells are cheaper than premium options, they are still pricey.

Specs:

Weight range: 5 to 30,40, 50, or 60 pounds

Increments: 10 pounds, 2.5 to 5  pounds with micro adjustment plates.

Dimensions (L x W x H): 18.5 inches x 7.9 inches x 7.9 inches

What we like:

These adjustable dumbbells are made almost entirely from metal and come with a lifetime warranty.

What we don’t like:

A max weight of 60 pounds won’t be enough for some.

NÜOBELL® Adjustable Dumbbell Set for Home, 5-80 LB

The average set of adjustable dumbbells isn’t going to meet the needs of heavy lifters. Whereas most max out at 55 to 60 pounds, NÜOBELLs go up to a whopping 80 pounds in 5-pound increments, essentially replacing 16 sets of dumbbells. Talk about space saving. What’s more, you can index through those weights in seconds, thanks to a very well-designed weight-changing mechanism that involves a simple twist of the handle. We also like the sleek look of these adjustable dumbbells, which have a round shape and plates that fit flush together, making them look the most like real dumbbells of any we reviewed.

Our only knock on these dumbbells is that they use a fair amount of plastic in their construction, so dropping them repeatedly isn’t an option. That’s a little disappointing given their steep $780 price tag. Still, it’s a reasonable price given how many standard dumbbells you can replace with this set.

Specs:

Type: Adjustable weight

Weight range: 5 to 80 pounds.

Dimensions (L x W x H): 19.2 inches x 7.6 inches x 7.3 inches

What we like:

Higher maximum weight makes these ideal for heavier lifters. The round shape with plates that fit flush together gives it a sleek look.

What we don’t like:

More plastic parts than there should be, given its steep price tag.

PowerBlock Pro 100 Adjustable Dumbbell

PowerBlock’s Pro Dumbbells are both durable and expandable. They are made of steel with a rubberized coating, making them among the most durable adjustable weights available. They’re also expandable. You can start with 40 pounds. Max weight: keep adding to it until you reach 100 pounds. This makes its step price tag: You’ll end up paying well over $1,000 to reach 100 pounds, but you can gradually add plates as you get stronger. The Pro 100 EXP dumbbells also offer a knurled or rubberized grip. We should note that the PowerBlocks’ square shape and cage design, which look very unlike any dumbbells we’ve ever seen, may not appeal to everyone.

Specs:

Type: Adjustable weight

Weight range: 5 to 40 pounds and up to 100 pounds with add-on kits.

Increments: 2.5 or 5 pounds

What we like:

These weights are incredibly durable and have an easy weight-changing mechanism. Plus, they’re expandable up to 100 pounds.

What we don’t like:

They’re expensive, and the square shape and cage design may not appeal to everyone.

What to consider when looking for adjustable dumbbells

Weight range

Look for a set of adjustable weights that meets your demands. Most adjustable weights max out between 50 and 60 pounds. There are also sets that can go up to 100 pounds per dumbbell, though they come at a premium. Along with the weight range, consider increments as well. Some adjustable weights increase by 2.5 pounds while others come in 5-pound increments. While this may not sound like a huge difference, it can be a big deal if your goal is to get stronger and you want to gradually increase weight without overloading.

Shape and size

Adjustable weights come in a surprisingly diverse range of sizes and shapes. Some have round shapes while others are square. Some adjustable dumbbells are bulkier than others and can be quite long when loaded up to capacity. Large dumbbells can be an issue as their size can interfere with movement. A good set of adjustable dumbbells should also feel balanced in your hand and give you the freedom of movement to perform your desired exercises.

Even though adjustable dumbbells offer significant space savings over a traditional set of dumbbells, they still take up space. A more compact set of dumbbells might make more sense if you’re living in a small apartment where space is at a premium.

Adjustment system

Adjustable weights use a variety of different systems for changing the amount of weight, including:

Twist: These systems have a dial or handle that you twist to change weights. It’s by far the quickest adjustment system and one that’s the best suited for circuit training.

Lock switches: These mechanisms are used exclusively by Rep Fitness QuickDraw adjustable dumbbells. To switch, simply lock or unlock each plate to the weight you want by flipping a switch. It’s fast, simple, and reliable.

Selector pins: This type of adjustment mechanism works by pulling out a pin and sliding it to select your desired weight. These mechanisms are quick and don’t require you to change plates.

Plate-loaded: These are the old school adjustable dumbbells. They work by manually sliding plates onto a handle, then securing them with collars or pins. Loadable dumbbells take more time to load and unload, but they also have much higher weight capacity since you can load up the bar plates. This makes them ideal for heavy lifters who need dumbbells that go beyond the 55-ish-pound range most adjustable dumbbells offer.

Durability

While you never want to drop your dumbbells, accidents happen. Given how pricey a set of adjustable dumbbells can be, you don’t want them breaking should they slip out of your hands. Dumbbells with more plastic parts are more likely to break or tear out more quickly than those with all-metal or almost all-metal parts.

Adjustable dumbbell FAQs

What do adjustable dumbbells typically weigh?

Most adjustable dumbbells have a total weight range of 5 to 55 pounds, though some higher-end models can go as high as 100 pounds.

Can you drop adjustable dumbbells?

You shouldn’t drop any dumbbells as doing so poses an injury risk, not to mention potential damage to your floor. That said, adjustable dumbbells are more susceptible to damage than traditional dumbbells if you drop them simply because they have more moving parts and plastic parts that can break.Â
