Former AFL stars are both known as controversy magnets

Former Sydney Swans star Warwick Capper has revisited his feud with Wayne Carey after revealing he cancelled an appearance at an upcoming footy event to avoid his fellow AFL great.

Capper was due to attend the Playboy business lunch and Grand Final Eve Eve Soiree in Melbourne this month, but has withdrawn to make sure he doesn’t run into the former Kangaroos star, saying, ‘I just thought I’d avoid him.’

The 62-year-old explained the origin of his feud with Carey goes way back to his infamous tryst with then-teammate Anthony Stevens’ wife Kelli.

‘He’s never kicked 100 goals in a season and he’s not loved by millions,’ Capper said of his rival.

‘I think it goes back to me saying on my radio show years ago that he shouldn’t have been with Stevo’s missus.

‘But I was only one of about 10 million people who said that.’

Earlier this year, Carey offered a blunt take on his relationship with Capper when the former Swans full-forward was banned from attending AFL matches for five years after allegedly making multiple vile comments to staff at the MCG during the 2024 grand final.

‘He’s not a friend of mine,’ Carey said.

‘I don’t call Warwick a friend of mine, he’s not even an acquaintance.

‘I run into Warwick every now and then. I have a thing, I don’t say anything about anyone [that] I wouldn’t say [directly] to them.

‘I have told Warwick this to his face, he’s too attention-seeking when he’s in the public arena.

‘That’s why I call him a Vegemite, a little bit goes a long way.’

Capper was accused of making lewd remarks about members of the catering staff and intimidating a female staff member.

He was also accused of saying, ‘You’re a nice looking girl. You’d look good in my brothel,’ to a female worker.

However, his manager Tony Marks said Capper had not made that comment directly to the staff member, and said the ban was far too harsh.

Carey disagreed.

‘Does the punishment fit the crime? I’ve got no idea,’ he said.

‘I assume there would have been more than one comment. I officially would say that the AFL probably got this right.’

Capper has been open about his struggles with the after-effects of concussions he suffered in his playing days, but Carey blasted him for allegedly using that as an excuse for his bad behaviour.

‘Don’t you dare say – or anyone, for that matter – say that [bad behaviour is] because he’s had a few knocks in footy,’ he said.

‘By the way, I can never remember him getting a [head] knock in footy.

‘Don’t blame behaviour on that crap.’
