GUEST OPINION: We’ve all been there–you’re about to join an important work call when suddenly the internet drops. From there on, it’s a series of Can you see me? Or Am I audible? as you desperately try to reconnect. Home internet problems are more common than you’d think.
The good news? Most of these issues are quick to fix. And no, you don’t need to be a tech expert to do so!
Let’s break down four common home internet problems and find ways to resolve them.
1. Slow Internet Connection
Webpages took forever to load, and videos buffered endlessly. Numerous factors contribute to a slow internet connection, including:
Too many devices connected, leading to system overload
Distance from the router
Outdated hardware, such as a modem reaching the end of its life
Here’s what you can do: Run a speed test to make sure you’re getting the speed you’re paying for.
Once that’s covered, reposition your router. Place it in a central position since distance and walls can weaken the signal. Next, make sure your router is using the latest software to fix bugs.
2. Wi-Fi Network Not Visible
Imagine trying to connect to the Wi-Fi and your network doesn’t even appear on the list of available devices. It’s like your Wi-Fi has suddenly vanished. Well, don’t panic. It can be caused by numerous reasons, such as:
Router not broadcasting
Outdated or corrupted driver
Interference
Router out of reach
Hidden network
It might sound too obvious, but restarting the router can help your laptop or phone detect the network again. Many times, a router is configured not to broadcast the SSID (network name), making it invisible. Try manually entering the network name and password to connect.
If troubleshooting steps don’t work, call your internet provider and get help.
3. Limited Bandwidth
What happens when too many people try to squeeze through a small doorway at once? It slows down everyone. This is what happens when your internet connection doesn’t have enough capacity to handle streaming, gaming, video downloading, and calling. Limited bandwidth is especially common during peak usage hours.
So what can you do? First off, disconnect unused devices and schedule heavy internet downloads for another time. Disable any automatic, background updates on devices and apps.
Consider upgrading your internet plan. Look into reliable high speed fiber internet for a smoother experience. Providers like Windstream will assess your household needs and allow you to personalise the plan.
4. Frequent Connection Drops
Frequent connection drops are sometimes more frustrating than slow speed. One minute, you’re watching your comfort movie, and the next, you see that dreaded rotating arrow on the screen. They are caused by signal interference and an overloaded network.
Limit connected devices and reset your router. Frequent drops also occur when your Internet Service Provider (ISP) is performing network maintenance or fixing infrastructure. Many times, ISPs intentionally lower the network speed to manage congestion. If the issue persists, switch to a more reliable and reputable internet provider.
