Melbourne motorists face a nightmare commute to work after a police chase ended in a dramatic crash near Crown Casino. 

Kings Way was closed for almost two hours in both directions between the West Gate Freeway and Flinders Street at Southbank.

Police launched a pursuit after spotting an allegedly stolen minivan at Truganina in the city’s west at about 4am on Tuesday. 

The van was followed along the West Gate Freeway until it exited at the Kings Way off-ramp and headed towards the city. 

Vehicle immobilisation devices were deployed by police on the road, but the minivan driver allegedly refused to pull over. 

The police chase was briefly terminated after the van crossed onto the wrong side of the road.

The van crashed head-on into a silver taxi on the Kings Way Bridge.

The taxi driver and passenger were both treated at the scene by paramedics.

The minivan driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries under police guard.

Police allege a large quantity of drugs was found inside the van.

Kings Way was reopened in both directions shortly before 7.30am but traffic remains very heavy. 

Motorists are advised to take consider alternative routes.

Those heading towards the city should use Queens Bridge Street, St Kilda Road or Montague Street.
