There are several new features that have come to Peloton over the last month as part of Peloton IQ. One of these is Cardio Performance Estimates; a tool designed to help members better understand and optimize their workouts.

The feature quietly rolled out last month alongside the launch of Peloton’s new Cross Training hardware devices and the broader set of Peloton IQ features, and it is now available on both original and Cross Training versions of the Bike, Bike+, Tread, and Tread+. Note that for now, Rows (both original and Cross Training Row+) do not have this feature. Peloton has not provided a reason for excluding it from the Row.

According to Peloton, Cardio Performance Estimates allow the platform to: “analyze a member’s unique workout history to provide personalized target metrics and data-driven goals to help them select their workout.” In practice, this means that when members browse the class library, they may see insights such as “Harder than your usual” or a projected output range & distance before they even start a class.

This should allow members to get a feel for if the class is going to be an easier or harder one, without having to analyze the class plan, or by trying to get hints on the difficulty level from the color of clothing instructors are wearing in the class thumbnails.

Peloton explains the new feature with the following overview:

“Looking for a ride or run that will let you take it easy or, on the other hand, push you to top your personal best Output? Peloton IQ can help you pick the perfect contender. Now, before you start a workout, Peloton IQ’s new cardio performance estimates—available on the Original or Cross Training Bikes and Treads—will predict your performance based on past rides, walks, or runs, and assign a personalized difficulty rating for the class you’re looking at. It’ll also give you some target metrics to shoot for, such as output and distance, so you have realistic and attainable short-term goals to chase during your workout.”

The system uses members’ recent workout history to generate these estimates. Peloton notes that members will need to have completed at least three recent workouts of the same discipline before the feature becomes active. Once available, it provides tailored goals designed to match members’ current performance level, and to help them train smarter over time.

As Peloton puts it: “Your workout history sets the path forward, helping you train smarter with goals matched to your potential.”

The addition of this feature marks another way Peloton is using member data in an attempt to enhance the training experience, giving riders and runners clearer insight into their progress, as well as a simpler and smarter way to select their next workout.

Although some Peloton IQ features are restricted only to the newer Peloton Cross Training devices, this cardio performance estimate feature was added to the original series devices as well (although as noted, it is not available on either version of the row).
