There’s just something about the new season that makes getting dressed feel exciting again. I, for one, can’t wait to pull my trusty jeans back out. With that in mind, I’ve been on the lookout for pieces that are just as easy to throw on as my favourite tees, but can make even jeans and trainers feel that little bit more pulled together. My first find? Next’s new rugby top.

When it comes to building a great capsule wardrobe, a classic print can go a long way towards adding personality. We saw polka dots reign supreme this summer, but for autumn, I’ll be making a return to a humble favourite: stripes.

Think of the rugby top as an easy, modern swap for your Breton tee. It’s a chicer way to wear stripes, combining the timeless pattern with a preppy, athletic silhouette.

Next’s version offers a relaxed take on the trend. The boxy shape gives it an effortless, laid-back look (not to mention making it incredibly comfortable), while the contrasting sporty collar and button placket add a polished finish. It’s the type of piece you can wear with minimal effort, yet it makes an outfit look genuinely considered.

One thing I particularly love about shopping at Next is that, when it has a winning style like this, there’s usually a wealth of colourways to choose from — in this case, five. Each option feels equally upbeat, with playful colour combinations.

For autumn, I’m personally eyeing up the graphic red, a shade that’s set to dominate the season. It’s softened by cream stripes, giving it a classic, preppy feel. Of course, the blue and chocolate brown colourway is another obvious winner, so I’m not surprised to see sizes already selling fast.

There are a few unexpected shades too. If butter yellow was a favourite in your summer rotation, you may be glad to see it take on a more autumnal feel when paired with brown stripes. Meanwhile, the blue and pink stripes, along with the green and pink option, feel decidedly more spring-like, but work surprisingly well, offering a refreshing shift from autumn’s usual muted palette.

However, what has impressed me most is that you get all this for just £19. Crafted from 100% cotton, it has all the makings of a capsule staple that will not only look good, but more importantly last in your wardrobe.

When it comes to styling, for everyday ease, I’ll be pairing mine with my trusty Levi’s and Mary Jane trainers. Equally, you could try dialling up the polish by styling it with tailored Bermuda shorts and ballet flats.

The only question is, how do I resist all five shades?
