Emmerdale spoilers follow.
Emmerdale has finally confirmed the fate of one of its biggest villains as the John Sugden storyline has come to an explosive end. Following John’s departure from the village, Cain Dingle was holding a grudge against Caleb Miligan for having helped the killer escape to Rotterdam.
In tonight’s episode, Caleb tried to convince Cain that he did his best to protect their family and keep everyone out of prison.

Cain, who sought revenge against John after the medic killed his son, pointed a gun at Caleb, saying he’d happily land behind bars if he could vindicate Nate. “You’re not worth it either,” Cain said, lowering the gun.
Elsewhere in the episode, after coming clean to Ruby about helping John, Caleb showed her the piece of paper where the murderer had written the location of Anthony Fox’s body.

Earlier this year, Ruby killed her abusive father Anthony. John, who wrongly believed his then-boyfriend Aaron Dingle was responsible, disposed of the body. After John’s escape, Ruby couldn’t believe that he would offer an incriminating piece of information to them.
“It’s the only power he’s got,” she told Caleb, who replied: “There’s only one way to find out.”
Later on, Caleb started digging in the area indicated by John. There, he found Anthony’s remains as the killer had said. After his discovery, Caleb reunited the Dingles at Chas’s to bring them up to speed about what happened with John.

Aaron was horrified that Caleb would help his ex, but Caleb insisted he didn’t have a choice. John had scheduled an email to the police in which he exposed Ruby for Anthony’s murder and would still be sent if he were arrested or killed, Caleb explained.
Caleb then told the gang that John had disclosed the location of Anthony’s remains.
“I’ve just seen his body. He was telling the truth,” he said.
“So that’s it? He just gets away with it?” Chas asked.
“The important thing is we’re all in the clear,” Caleb tried, but Aaron insisted it would never be over for him with John still walking free.
After Aaron burst out of the room, a furious Cain made it clear he wouldn’t let it go either. He said he would go pack to hunt John down to France, where the killer said he was headed next.

In the final scenes, Caleb was pouring himself a well-deserved drink after such an eventful day when another twist materialised in the person of Jai Sharma.
Jai had been wanting to talk to Caleb all day, and for good reason. Showing him the CCTV of their offices, Jai played Caleb the clip where he helped John into the van.
“I can’t think of any good reason that you would help smuggle a known murderer out of the country,” Jai told Caleb. “Unless you’ve done something very bad yourself.”
Knowing he couldn’t escape Jai, Caleb asked him, “What do you want?”.
Jai said he hadn’t decided yet, leaving Caleb with fresh trouble on his hands.
Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
