Vigil season 3 is currently in production, starring its most “multinational cast to date”, including an actor straight from hit Netflix crime drama Dept. Q.

The show, also featuring Gentleman Jack’s Suranne Jones and Game of Thrones’ Rose Leslie, is relocating to the Arctic for its third instalment.

Filming has already started in Svalbard, with the new season focusing on DCI Amy Silva (Jones) and DI Kirsten Longacre (Leslie) as they investigate a murder in a remote Arctic research station.

The upcoming season will also mark the return of Gary Lewis as Detective Superintendent Robertson, Dominic Mafham as Sir Ian Downing, and Orla Russell as Amy and Kirsten’s daughter, Poppy.

It looks like the relationship between the two protagonists and their careers may be on the line, as they find themselves working a big case this time around.

When a member of a covert British special forces mission is shot dead, Amy and Kirsten will need to catch the killer and diffuse a potential international confrontation. Additionally, the series explores the race for energy and resources in the Arctic amid the ongoing threat of climate change.

“I’m grateful to the BBC and World Productions for backing the ambition of a story that takes Vigil to the Arctic,” Vigil writer and creator Tom Edge said in a statement.

“This series grapples with the issues that will define tomorrow’s world: melting ice caps, conflict over resources, energy wars, and lives put at risk in pursuit of peace and profits.”

Jake Lushington, executive producer for World Productions, echoed Edge’s feelings.

“We are thrilled to be kicking off filming series three of Vigil with Suranne and Rose in the epic arctic landscapes of Svalbard and welcome our most multinational cast to date,” Lushington said, “as well as featuring new and established Scottish talent.”

Vigil season 3 is airing on the BBC at a later date. Seasons 1 and 2 are available now on iPlayer.
