Coronation Street spoilers follow for the latest episode available on streaming, which will air on ITV1 tonight.

Coronation Street has cleared up a bit of confusion regarding its new family in tonight’s episode, explaining why Ben and his mum Maggie have different accents. He speaks with a very Northern Irish accent while hers is from the west coast of Ireland, something fans have picked up on following their introduction.

In scene from tonight’s episode — which likely would have been filmed long before their first scenes aired and was therefore always planned — the topic is brought up and there’s a reason given for the discrepancy.

In the episode, David Platt — who himself has a more Yorkshire than Mancunian accent — went to the Rovers and blatantly just asks Ben what’s going on.

“Can I ask you a question? How come you and your mum have got different accents? Or is it I’m too drunk when I’m in here?” he asks.

“Now that, David, is a long story,” Ben replies. “But the short one is she moved up to Belfast from Galway when she married my da.”

“So no smooth accent for you then?” David adds, and Ben cheekily replies: “I’m smooth enough as it is, mate.”

Their chatter gets interrupted when Shona walks in and reprimands him for not being healthy, something he doesn’t take kindly to. The real reason they’re being frosty with each other is because of the issues with their unborn baby, which are set to explode later this week.

Elsewhere in the episode, Maggie takes Eva to the salon for a pampering session as her treat, even though Ben thinks it’ll be a disaster.

Returning to The Rovers, the two tell Ben that they had a great time, with Maggie even stating that the best part of it was spending time with Eva.

“We’re all so busy day-to-day, to take some time out to have a few moments to relax together, is just what the doctor ordered,” she gushes.

Eva quietly tells Ben that she really thinks she’s made a breakthrough with Eva, but it looks like Maggie has an ulterior motive.

“Keep your friends close, and son’s latest mistake firmly where you can see her. What Ben sees in her, I’ll never know,” she slyly says to Audrey and Bethany while on the wine.

How will Eva react to being duped?

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and streams on ITVX.
