28 Years Later: The Bone Temple will land in UK cinemas on 14 January, two days earlier than its initial release date. A sequel to 28 Years Later (2025), and the fourth instalment in the 28 Days Later franchise, fans have also been treated to a chilling new trailer.

“Expanding upon the world created by Danny Boyle and Alex Garland in 28 Years Later – but turning that world on its head – Nia DaCosta directs 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple,” teases the synopsis.

“In a continuation of the epic story, Dr. Kelson (Ralph Fiennes) finds himself in a shocking new relationship – with consequences that could change the world as they know it – and Spike’s (Alfie Williams) encounter with Jimmy Crystal (Jack O’Connell) becomes a nightmare he can’t escape.

“In the world of The Bone Temple, the infected are no longer the greatest threat to survival – the inhumanity of the survivors can be stranger and more terrifying.”

Alongside Fiennes, O’Connell and Williams, all of whom reprise their roles from 28 Years Later, the upcoming horror film will also mark the return of Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Jamie, Spike’s father. In a milestone moment for the franchise, The Bone Temple will also bring back Cillian Murphy – star of 28 Days Later (2002) – as Jim, a survivor of the original outbreak in London.

Rounding out the cast, Erin Kellyman, Emma Laird and Maura Bird also appear as members of Jimmy Crystal’s crew.

Part of a planned trilogy, starting with 28 Years Later, The Bone Temple is billed as the second instalment, while a third is currently in development. Speaking with IGN in June, Danny Boyle, who is billed as a producer on The Bone Temple, teased what’s to come.

“He is in the second one,” Boyle said of Murphy’s return. “I shouldn’t give away too much. I’ll get killed.”

“Although each story [in the trilogy] completes itself, there’s a handover section to the next film as well,” the filmmaker added. “So it’s very ambitious. We haven’t got the money for the third one yet. It will depend on how the first one does, I guess. But hopefully if we do okay, they’ll give us the go-ahead for the money and for the third one. Everybody’s standing by for that, really. Including Cillian.”
