Emmerdale spoilers follow from Wednesday’s episode (17 December), which is available to watch now on ITVX and YouTube but hasn’t yet aired on ITV1.

Emmerdale’s Mary Goskirk moves out of her daughter Rhona’s home tonight, but makes it clear that she won’t be leaving the village. The no-nonsense character stands her ground after Rhona desperately plots to send her away for her own good.

Mary was left devastated last night as Rhona and her husband Marlon asked her to find a new place to live. They claimed that there wasn’t enough room at Smithy Cottage following April Windsor’s difficult year, but their real priority was to keep Mary safe.

Since Mary returned to the village following a short break, she’s been asking awkward questions about what Rhona, Marlon and April are all hiding from her.

Desperate to prevent Mary from finding out about April’s enforced drug dealing at the hands of Ray Walters and Celia Daniels, panicking Rhona and Marlon want their beloved family member as far away as possible.

In follow-on scenes tonight, Mary decides to move in with local vicar Charles Anderson and his mum Claudette on a temporary basis.

Rhona and Marlon assume this will just be for the night, but kind-hearted Charles reveals that Mary can stay for as long as she likes.

Later, when Rhona pops into the pub and checks in with Mary, she casually suggests that her mum should go back to Cornwall instead.

“You are unbelievable,” Mary replies. “Cornwall again? How far away do you want me to go?

“I’ll tell you what, I’ll buy a one-way ticket to Australia, shall I? You want me out of sight, out of mind.

“I don’t pretend to understand any of this. I’m not sure I want to, but you hear this: I am going nowhere.”

Mary’s emotional declaration is bad news for Rhona, who doesn’t want her mum caught up in Ray and Celia’s games as she continues to live in the village. Ray has already made a point of befriending Mary with sinister motives, so it doesn’t look good.

How long will it take for Mary to figure out the truth behind Rhona’s decision to push her away?

The NSPCC, Childline and FRANK offer support and resources for the issues raised in April and Dylan’s storyline.

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
