Ties, whiskeys, and wallets have long been the default to gift dad on Father’s Day. However, after speaking to dads, they say the gifts that matter are the ones that solve a real or overlooked problem, carry emotional significance, or make daily life a little easier to move through.
Jeff Galak, professor of marketing at Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business, has a name for why so many gifts miss the mark. “People usually suffer from an empathy gap when they buy gifts. The giver is largely focused on the moment of the exchange when giving something flashy or expensive, instead of the emotional value.” A sentimental item might not prompt a dramatic reaction when the wrapping paper comes off, but it delivers consistent emotional value over months or years. On intentional gift giving, Galak is equally direct about the obsession with surprise: give someone exactly what they tell you they want, and you guarantee both utility and meaning. We spoke to dads on what they have been gifted that has improved their life and how.
The Father Who Is Fashionable Without Compromising Function
For the dad who moves between work, school runs, and weekend activity without stopping to change, the right bag is a genuine wardrobe solution. Ben Watkiss, a father and founder, points to Stubble & Co. as a brand that earns repeat loyalty. The unisex UK-born label has sold in every American state in the past year, with 94% of customers saying they will return, proving that customer loyalty is a core part of the brand’s philosophy. “The motion backpack changed how I view my day,” Watkiss tells me over email. “I used to struggle fitting in work, family, friends, and training. That bag solved it.”
Dad deserves a bag that keeps up. Lightweight, breathable and built for stability, with a suspended laptop sleeve that doubles as a hydration pocket. This is what function and fashion look like together.

Other favorites include the Roll Top which is built for versatility across longer days, while the crossbody is waterproof, wipe-clean, and designed for grab-and-go moments. Functionality and considered design are no longer mutually exclusive, and Stubble & Co makes that case convincingly. For the dad who has never bought anything for himself but wants to look sharp, a bag is a great gift option.
Exercise Equipment For The Father Who Keeps Moving
A 2023 study from the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre, tracking over 72,000 people, found that reaching around 9,000 to 10,000 steps a day cuts mortality risk by nearly 40% and cardiovascular disease risk by over 20%. Getting there, though, requires the confidence to actually leave the house. Finbarre Snarey knows this well. After a serious foot injury, he was gifted a blackthorn wood walking cane for Father’s Day, and the effect was as much psychological as physical. “Having a trusty, well-balanced cane made a difference to my confidence when getting out and about,” he shares over email.

Blackthorn is a hard, dense wood with a natural knobbled texture formed from the thorny growth of the tree. What’s key is that no two canes are identical. For a dad dealing with reduced mobility or recovering from injury, the mental barrier to movement can be as significant as the physical one. “A good walking cane helps with balance, confidence, and independence. For me, wellness is having the right support to keep moving through the world.” So, you can ditch the fancy exercise equipment that take a lot of space and might be unaffordable, for an accessible cane that will keep dad on his toes- literally.
The Father Who Forgets To Rest Needs A Massage Chair
Psychologist and OCD/anxiety specialist Dr. Nir Baharav makes a pointed observation about modern healthcare. “One of the few things that doctors rarely ever plan for is rest,” he confides over email. After receiving a massage chair as a gift, he found that sitting in it after a long clinical day became a reliable signal to his body that the day was over. His particular chair did not need to be expensive or have all the features that might be available in a spa; it simply needed to exist and be used. “Currently, we are in a culture where burnout is discussed regularly. However, most days it is just discussed, and very little effort is made to help change how each person lives their day.” For dads who struggle to give themselves permission to slow down, an intentional gift can do what a conversation cannot. It makes the suggestion tangible. Sure a trip to the spa is a great idea for dad, but a massage chair or even a massage gun can allow him to keep the relaxation go on a daily basis.

Harvard Health recommends around 15.5 cups of water daily for men, supporting digestion, bladder health, and sustained energy. For Joe Kirkpatrick, founder of Mammoth Mug and a dad himself, the problem was simple and persistent: he kept forgetting to drink enough water. “The gifts that actually get used solve a daily friction point and for me that’s hydration. This is a small habit that is compounded daily and the wellness gift worth giving,” he notes over email. His personal favorite over other competitors is the Mammoth Mug which holds 2.5 liters of liquid, enough to cover a full day’s intake in a single fill. Most competitors cap out at one liter or 1.2 liter which means multiple refills or, more likely, the habit quietly dropping off. A bottle visible on the desk is a reminder in itself whether dad is at home, the gym or in the office.

Not every meaningful gift has a price tag and there are many tools to help you think of something personalized. Last Father’s Day, Galak’s daughter made him a card which she spent hours drawing and coloring to get every detail right. “When we receive a gift, we are not usually valuing the retail cost. We are valuing the perceived sacrifice of the giver.” A premium card from a shop takes three minutes to select and costs a few dollars but a handmade one costs nothing except for real time and care. That, Galak says, is exactly what creates a lasting emotional connection. For anyone looking for something that their father will genuinely appreciate and emotionally feel, a handmade blanket, card, or meal carries more weight than most things money can buy.
