The Oppo Watch S2 only brings incremental upgrades over its predecessor.

Oppo has officially revealed the Watch S2, a lightweight fitness-focused smartwatch featuring personalised fat-burning guidance, upgraded health sensors and up to 10 days of battery life. Launching on September 22 in three colours, the device’s pricing and international availability remain unconfirmed.

The Oppo Watch S2 is shaping up as a relatively lightweight smartwatch that focuses heavily on fitness and health tracking. It retains a round-dial design, measures 8.9mm thick and weighs 34.4g — all nearly identical to its predecessor. Three colour options have been announced: Vibrant Orange, Misty Powder and Mountain Shadow Grey.

Its highlight is FatMax, a mode designed to provide a personalised fat-burning heart-rate zone using factors such as age, weight, height and activity level. Oppo also claims the watch can display estimated fat burned in grams during exercise. However, we would be highly skeptical of such claims, since studies have shown that smartwatches are generally unreliable for measuring calorie burn.

Health monitoring also gets an upgrade, with the watch supporting ECG, wrist temperature, blood oxygen and heart-rate tracking. Oppo claims its optical sensor has 75% improved resistance to interference and can achieve 98.8% exercise heart-rate accuracy. Again, these are all manufacturer claims that are yet to be verified via independent testing. Battery life is specified as lasting up to 10 days, falling to seven days under regular use and four days with the always-on display enabled.

The Watch S2 is scheduled to launch in China on September 22 alongside the Find X10 series. Information on pricing and international availability is still pending.

I first became acquainted with computers in my early teens after a broken leg from a football (soccer) match temporarily condemned me to a predominately indoor lifestyle. Soon afterwards I was building my own systems. Having studied philosophy and anthropology, I am particularly fascinated by how computer technology has fundamentally and dramatically reshaped human culture, and how it continues to do so.
