Bill Maher has revealed why he doesn’t tend to host A-listers on his hit HBO show Real Time.

‘You know, the show[business] people, this is not the show for them,’ he said during a conversation with celebrity news journalist Billy Bush on his Club Random podcast.

‘Not putting them down, but you have to like know s**t. And celebrities mostly do not feel the need to know s**t,’ Maher added.

‘And then there’s many who don’t know s**t, but it doesn’t stop them from speaking,’ he continued.

Bush, the host of Access Hollywood from 2004 to 2016, added: ‘Because you can’t just be known for memorizing words that someone else wrote and spitting them back into a camera. It’s gotta be something more.

‘And I think a lot of them get into trouble that way.’

The pair had been comparing their connections within Hollywood, when Maher commented that most people incorrectly assume he’s close with certain celebs.

Maher went on to elaborate on why he prefers ‘pundits, governors, senators, congressmen’ as guests.

‘Celebrities, they’re just a different breed. They’re loaded with talent. Talent is different than, you know, knowing thing,’ he said.

‘And you know, thinking ain’t their best thing often.

Maher added that ‘there’s many exceptions to that.’

The host has welcomed the likes of Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, and Alec Baldwin on Real Time in recent years.

Arnold Schwarzenegger – once the governor of California – appeared on the panel-style program on Friday.

The show, which sees three guests duke it out over current events, has been on the air for nearly 23 years.

Maher’s podcast, meanwhile, launched in 2022.
