“It’s Kerry’s worst nightmare,” our Emmerdale insider explains. “She’s never seen eye-to-eye with Jai, but their relationship is at an all-time low. All Kerry wanted to do was get away from Jai, now she’s stuck with him for goodness knows how long.

“Of course, Kerry and Jai could use the time to sort things out between them, but that’s a big ask.”

The drama unfolds when Kerry asks Billy Fletcher to cover her at work so that she can meet Matty Barton and Jacob Gallagher at the shop, where the trio read through the coroner’s report from the limo crash.

However, when Jai spots the group messing about with a bottle of booze, he fires Kerry on the spot for skiving…

“Work is the least of Kerry’s worries when the coroner’s report comes in,” explains our source. “Once she sits down with Jacob and Matty, she ignores Jai’s calls and decides to lighten the mood with a drinking game.

“But unfortunately for her, Jai walks in at just the wrong moment and fires her. Jai also has a bee in his bonnet about Kerry being late that morning – it’s a dreadful day from start to finish!”

Following Jai’s disciplinary action, Jacob and Matty admit that they feel concerned for Kerry. But once Caleb hears about Kerry’s ordeal, the Depot boss demands that Jai rehire her, pronto.

With his tail between his legs, Jai formally apologises to Kerry before she revels in her victory while living it up at the Woolie. Having observed it all, Jai declares that Kerry’s triumph is ‘pyrrhic’, meaning that the cost of her coming out on top makes it not worth winning at all.

At first, Jai’s declaration confuses Kerry, but all becomes clear when the businessman makes it his mission to ensure that Kerry’s life at work is a living hell.

So, when Kerry and Jai become locked in the Depot together, will their row reach boiling point? Or can they somehow call a truce?

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
