Portland Trail Blazers head coach Chauncey Billups has been replaced on an interim basis by former NBA player Tiago Splitter following Billups’ arrest in a federal gambling indictment.Â
The NBA was thrust into a full-blown crisis on Thursday morning after the FBI revealed a series of wide-ranging investigations into Mafia-led gambling rackets, with Portland Trail Blazers head coach Billups and Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier among the 34 arrested.
The FBI indictment revealed ominous text messages involving several members of infamous organized crime families connected to the gambling probe, including the Bonanno, Gambino, Genovese, and Lucchese mobs.
Texts in the document showed that one of the accused gangsters sent intimidating messages to one of the victims, threatening them for unpaid gambling debts.
‘Watch what’s good now. You’ve been running your mouth unchecked,’ one message read. Â
