The Devil Wears Prada 2 finally lands in cinemas next week after a 20-year wait for fans, and the hype levels are about to go through the roof. Following the world premiere last night, the movie has been hailed as the “perfect sequel” in first reactions.

Directed by David Frankel and written by Aline Brosh McKenna as for the first movie, the sequel sees Andy (Anne Hathaway) return to the sleek offices of Runway as Miranda (Meryl Streep) attempts to keep the magazine afloat. Their one hope lies in Emily (Emily Blunt), now the head of a luxury brand, who holds the keys to the money that could prove critical to Runway’s survival.

Those lucky few in attendance at last night’s premiere have now taken to social media to share their first thoughts on The Devil Wears Prada 2. Spoiler alert, they’re uniformly positive.

“The Devil Wears Prada 2 is phenomenal. It is the perfect sequel that exceeded all expectations. Aline Brosh McKenna’s script is sharp and witty. We’ll be quoting this for years to come,” enthused Variety’s Jazz Tangcay.

“Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt are still great. Stunning costumes, and that soundtrack slaps hard… Loved it. Worth the wait.”

The Hollywood Reporter’s Alex Weprin added: “A biting media parody wrapped up in high fashion. Every journalist who sees it will cringe from recognition. It was very funny, and there were great one liners that will stand up to some of the moments from the first film. Fans will be thrilled, we don’t see too many theatrical movies like this anymore.”

“The Devil Wears Prada 2 is a FUN and FIERCE sequel that makes a statement. Anne Hathaway and Meryl Streep slip back into their iconic roles with ease and SERVE in every single frame. It feels familiar in the best way, timely in the right ways, and is well worth the wait,” enthused The Movie Podcast’s Daniel Baptista.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 also brings back Stanley Tucci as Nigel, Tracie Thoms as Lily and Tibor Feldman as Runway chairman Irv Ravitz, while newcomers to the cast include Justin Theroux, Simone Ashley, Lucy Liu, Caleb Hearon and Lady Gaga.

One person who won’t be back, unless it’s been kept extremely secret, is Adrian Grenier as Andy’s much-hated ex Nate. He seems pretty chill about it though, recently mocking his absence in an advert for Starbucks.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 is released in cinemas on 1 May.
