What if you could get to nearly 93 and still be lauded for your energy, your glowing skin and your fitness? Step forward Dame Joan Collins, who recently appeared at the opening of the Cannes Film Festival to global acclaim.

Happily for the rest of us, Dame Joan has spoken up about her nutrition and exercise secrets – and one simple food hack that she believes ‘is very beneficial’. The actor revealed she eats an avocado almost every day. and takes three supplements to boost her health. ‘I take Vitamin C, E and omega oils,’ she said, and added: ‘The quality of what you eat is as important as the quality of the products you use,’ she said. ‘I try to eat a balanced diet.’

Now science is suggesting that Dame Joan might be onto something – recent studies have revealed that her favourite creamy fruit has a multitude of health benefits. While there’s no denying avocados are calorie dense (half an avocado contains 161 calories), they’re also nutrient dense – containing significant amounts of fibre, potassium, folate, vitamin K and E, and magnesium. They’re also a great source of phytonutrients like beta carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, important for maintaining eye health.

Research suggests that eating avocados could also improve heart health and may play a protective role in type 2 diabetes, thanks to their high fat and fibre content.

But a daily avocado isn’t the only nutrition hack that Dame Joan shared. In an interview with Hello!, she revealed that as well as not usually eating breakfast, she avoids late night snacking, too.

‘Never, not before I go to bed,’ she said. ‘I believe our body is a factory, it needs to be fed the right things. If you have a great car, you don’t put inferior petrol into it. I’m very fussy about what I eat.’
