The FIFA World Cup continues to dominate the TV schedules this weekend, leaving non-football fans with fewer options than usual. In recent weeks, soaps on both the BBC and ITV have been hit by major changes, disrupting regular viewing for fans.
The sporting action doesn’t stop there, however, as England take on Panama tonight (27 June), while the knockout phase gets under way on Sunday (28 June) with South Africa vs Canada. Furthermore, cricket, athletics and Formula 1 are also taking up space in the schedule.
If you’d rather skip sport altogether, there are still plenty of great alternatives across Netflix and terrestrial broadcasters. So, without further ado, here are four TV shows and one movie worth adding to your watchlist to survive the World Cup frenzy.
Avatar: The Last Airbender

After a two-year wait, Aang’s journey continues in the second season of Netflix’s live action adaptation of the beloved animated series. As war with the Fire Nation edges closer, Aang, Katara and Sokka travel to the Earth Kingdom in search of allies.
Having started to master waterbending, Aang must now learn earthbending if he’s to have any hope of defeating Fire Lord Ozai. That task falls to the formidable Toph, a blind but immensely powerful Earthbender whose stubborn streak and razor-sharp wit make her an instant scene-stealer.
With bigger battles, high-stakes action and plenty of familiar faces returning, the second season of the fantasy series promises to expand the world of Aang and their peers in exciting ways.

Little Brother

John Cena and Eric André team up in this offbeat comedy movie about an unexpected reunion that quickly spirals into chaos. Cena plays Rudd, a successful estate agent whose carefully organised life is thrown into disarray when his “little brother” Marcus (André) suddenly reappears.
The twist? Marcus isn’t actually Rudd’s younger brother, but someone he met years earlier through a Big Brother-style mentoring programme. As Marcus barges back into Rudd’s life, his fiancée Deirdre (Michelle Monaghan) tries to keep the peace, but Marcus’s unpredictable behaviour makes that easier said than done.

The Boy That Never Was

Based on the psychological thriller by Karen Perry, The Boy That Never Was continues to deliver twists in its gripping third episode. The series follows Harry and Robin, whose lives are shattered when their three-year-old son Dillon disappears during a devastating earthquake.
Years later, with Dillon presumed dead, Harry becomes convinced that he has spotted his son alive and well, reigniting a desperate search for answers. As the mystery deepens, long-buried family secrets begin to emerge.
This weekend’s episode sees Harry and Robin venture further into Dublin’s criminal underworld, while hidden CCTV footage leaves Harry questioning whether Robin has been hiding crucial information all along.

Two Weeks in August

The final episodes of Two Weeks in August will air consecutively on Saturday, with the eight-part series following a group of friends whose annual holiday is thrown into turmoil after long-held secrets and simmering tensions begin to surface.
What starts as a relaxing getaway soon descends into suspicion, betrayal and emotional fallout as relationships are tested and pushed to breaking point.
Boasting an impressive cast and plenty of twists, the drama explores friendship, marriage and trust against the backdrop of a sun-soaked holiday that quickly becomes anything but idyllic.
Two Weeks in August airs on Saturday at 9pm on BBC One.

Despite the World Cup and various other sporting events, Love Island remains another one of the summer’s biggest talking points, and fans are in luck as the ITV dating show continues this Sunday.
The latest week has seen explosive dumpings, the return of the ‘Heart Rate Challenge’ and plenty of relationship drama as several couples find themselves on shaky ground. With new twists arriving almost every night, loyalties are constantly shifting and no one is guaranteed a place in the Villa.
