Emmerdale star Joe Absolom has gotten quite candid about a rival soap after joining the Dales as Ray Walters.

Absolom, who previously starred in EastEnders as Matthew Rose, has recently made his debut on Emmerdale as the village’s new villain.

Speaking about his experience on the ITV soap, the actor said “it’s good fun to be horrible” and praised cast and crew of Emmerdale.

“Everyone’s really nice. They really look after you, much better than the BBC did,” he said.

“When I was on EastEnders, it was like, ‘Right, that’s your time, see you then’. It was like a job, which is fine.

“But this is like, they look after me, they put me in a nice place, they pick me up. It’s really nice. Everyone’s very nice. I get my own cup, yeah, I got a pass. I can get into the building whenever I want!”

Looking back on his time as part of the cast of EastEnders, in which he starred between 1997 and 2000, Absolom reminisced about meeting stars from other soaps.

He said that Emmerdale stars were “the nicest” back then, while another ITV soap’s ensemble were not “particularly friendly” in his recollection.

“When we did EastEnders I remember meeting all the other casts from the soaps and Emmerdale, always, were by far the nicest bunch of people,” he said.

Hollyoaks were like footballers, Coronation Street were quite, I don’t know, they were never particularly friendly, but Emmerdale, I remember everyone in EastEnders at the time saying Emmerdale were the nicest bunch,” he added.

“And now I’m here and I’ve met them. I believe that’s true.”

Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
