Current employees highlight work-life balance and career stability

Rodney Graber, CRU Concrete’s longest-serving employee, taught Pedro Valerio Cano the tricks of the trade.

“I’m proud of him. It’s a trade. You learn every day. I still learn, which I like about it,” Graber said.

Ken Kurszewski, who took over the now 80-year-old company in 2009, said the company emphasized training and development.

“We always stress learning and growing, trying new things,” Kurszewski said.

Graber helped Valerio Cano step up and reach his potential with detail-oriented hands-on work.

“A little bit OCD and likes to make sure things are like, perfectly flat, square, stuff like that. I really get to, like, perfect it or whatever, make sure everything’s perfect…” Valerio Cano said.

“I’m so happy with seeing younger generation come up through the ranks,” Graber added.

Kurszewski said employees can make a great living while enjoying a balanced schedule.

“You can go home and not have the stress of, you know, what am I doing the next day? You’ve got a foreman that helps figure those things out. And get to be home at night. You get to be home on the weekends, and then you get to be outside during the day,” he said.

“A bunch of benefits to it here and there,” Valerio Cano added.

Graber highlighted the stability of the work.

“Houses, the driveways. Oh, it’s starting to break up?  You’re going to need new… So you will always have a job is what I’m saying about this trade,” he said.
