People in Aberdeen have been encouraged to get active by taking on a new fitness challenge that rewards exercise.

The council has teamed up with Street Tag to launch the new smartphone app in the city, with the app free for residents of all ages.

Street Tag turns physical activity into a game, with exercise or steps converted into points that can be used to win rewards for schools and communities.

It will launch its first season in Aberdeen from Monday, March 23, running until Monday, May 18. Virtual tags will be placed in popular walking routes and areas with green spaces, to encourage those taking part to walk, run, scoot, roll or cycle to collect each tag, with tags worth up to 50 points.

These points can be collected individually or as part of a team of up to six people, who can climb the live leaderboard and have the chance to win exciting rewards for their schools and communities.

The most active schools and community groups will have the opportunity to win a variety of rewards, including Aberdeen Gift Cards and Sports Direct E-Vouchers.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to join in with their children by logging steps, walks, cycling trips, and tag visits, including during journeys to and from school, allowing for safe participation and avoiding pupils bringing smartphones into schools and classrooms.

Aberdeen City Council Finance convener Councillor Alex McLellan said: “We’re thrilled to be working with Street Tag to bring this exciting new app to Aberdeen, making it easier for everyone to stay active whilst taking part in a fun new challenge.

“Whether you’re walking, running, or cycling, every step counts towards building a more vibrant and energetic Aberdeen.”

Seun Oshinaike, Founder of Street Tag, added: “We’re thrilled to be building partnerships in Aberdeen that encourage families and communities to stay active in a fun, sustainable, and accessible way. “Street Tag offers a fantastic way for people to take part in a variety of activities and challenges, using their phones and working together in teams to channel their competitive spirit and win prizes.”
