A new Cochrane review’s conclusion that intermittent fasting has little effect on weight loss compared with ‘doing nothing’ is sensationalist and wrong, an Australian obesity researcher says.
Professor Leonie Heilbronn is considering a formal complaint to Cochrane over the review, which compared intermittent fasting (IF) with regular dietary advice or no intervention in adults with overweight or obesity.
The review, which included 22 randomised controlled trials with 1995 total participants, made global news.
A meta-analysis had concluded with moderate certainty that IF likely made little to no difference to weight loss compared with no intervention, as measured by change from baseline weight, based on six studies with 427 total participants.
