This week, Shona and David attended a pregnancy scan, but the sonographer pointed out that there could be a mass on the baby’s neck, so an urgent appointment for the next day was arranged.

The first section of today’s episode was told from Shona’s point of view, and she fumed that David seemed so nonchalant ahead of their important meeting with the consultant.
But in the next section, told from David’s perspective, it was revealed that he was just desperate to support his wife and was scared of saying the wrong thing to her.

The couple were at odds as they prepared for the appointment, but they finally opened up to one another about how they were feeling and came together as they arrived at the hospital.
Shona and David got the news that their baby daughter did have a tumour on her neck – and that if they chose to continue with the pregnancy, Shona would need to undergo complex and risky surgery.
David was stunned, but Shona seemed to block out what they had been told and instead celebrated that the consultant had revealed they were having a girl.

Back at home, David refused to ignore the risks to Shona and the baby and said that they should consider having a termination.
Shona couldn’t allow herself to think about the worst-case scenario, and when Nick, Sarah and Audrey later came round for dinner, she kept quiet about the news and instead announced their baby’s gender.
As the Platts toasted the new addition to the family, David looked anxious. Once alone, Shona told her husband that she would give her baby every chance and would be having the procedure no matter what.
