Coronation Street spoilers follow.
Coronation Street’s Aidan O’Callaghan has addressed his recent appearance on the ITV soap, following his character’s shocking death. Last night’s special episode delved into the Driscoll family’s mysterious past, as viewers were introduced to Maggie’s husband Alan (O’Callaghan) through a series of flashbacks.
While the residents of Weatherfield celebrated the matriarch’s 65th birthday at The Rovers, viewers learnt of Maggie’s difficult marriage as she struggled to maintain control over her family.
The flashbacks revealed tension between the spouses, who clashed over how to raise their young sons, Ben and Finlay. While Maggie appeared to benevolently spoil the boys, it later became clear that she used manipulative tactics to gain their favour.
In the final flashback, Maggie’s dark side was revealed as she and Alan argued about her previous affair. After hurling insults at each other, the mother-of-two pushed her husband down the stairs, leaving him for dead.

But unbeknownst to Maggie, the incident was witnessed by her youngest son Finlay, who quickly ran back to his bed.
Finlay currently lives in Florida and has yet to appear on-screen. But could this revelation come back to haunt Maggie in the near future?
Meanwhile, despite only appearing in a handful of scenes, Alan definitely made a mark on the show, adding another dangerous layer to Maggie’s personality.
Following his character’s death, O’Callaghan took to Instagram to express his gratitude for the role.

“A bit lost for words after tonight… Tonight genuinely felt like a childhood dream coming full circle. Happy 65th Birthday, Coronation Street,” he wrote in the caption.
“I grew up watching this show, never imagining I’d one day be part of a storyline like this on such an iconic show. So grateful to the entire cast & crew for the warmth, generosity and graft.”
The actor also shared a collection of on-set photos with his co-stars and stunt double, as well as a snap of himself behind the bar of the landmark pub.
“And to everyone who sent messages, shared, posted and reached out, truly, thank you. I felt every bit of the support and it meant more than you know,” he concluded.
