Jenna Coleman has been confirmed to lead the exciting cast for new British drama Number 10. Written by Doctor Who’s Steven Moffat, the Channel 4 series follows the going ons in the UK Prime Minister’s residence.

It has now been confirmed that Coleman, who famously played Clara Oswald in Doctor Who, has been cast as the Deputy Chief of Staff to the PM (played by Trying’s Rafe Spall), while the Chief of Staff will be portrayed by Mr Bates vs The Post Office’s Katherine Kelly.

Also confirmed for the ensemble are The Celebrity Traitors’ Joe Wilkinson, Red Eye’s Jing Lusi, Downton Abbey: A New Era’s Laura Haddock, Wicked’s Shaun Prendergast, Rebus’ Richard Rankin, Murderbot’s Akshay Khanna, Good Omens’ Abigail Lawrie and Andor’s Pierro Niel-Mee.

Happy Valley’s Rick Warden, Trying’s Robyn Cara, Vera’s Rhiannon Clements, Line of Duty’s Patrick Baladi, Shadow and Bone’s Harry Baxendale, The Feud’s Alex Macqueen, Slow Horses’ Sid Sagar, The Jury: Murder Trial’s Sam Alexander and Karen Pirie’s Emer Kenny have also been cast.

The series is teased as “a wallpapered labyrinth of romance, crisis and heartbreak” set in the “only terrace house in history with mice and a nuclear deterrent” and “the only knock-through in the world where a hangover can start a war”.

Number 10 will centre on a fictional government, with the audience unclear over which party is in power, instead focusing on “the building and everyone inside”.

“Not just the Prime Minister upstairs, but the conspiracy theorist who runs the cafe three floors below, the man who repairs the lift that never works, the madly ambitious ‘advisors’ fighting for office space in cupboard,” the synopsis adds. “Oh, and of course, the cat.

“Number 10 is all of Britain in a house: it’s British history under one roof. It’s how we all got into the mess we’re in. It’s also our only hope of getting out of it.”

“Number 10 is a sensational piece of writing, equal to its peerless author, Steven Moffat,” Spall said, admitting he is “delighted to be playing the Prime Minister” in a “funny, real and thrilling piece of TV”.

Coleman added: “I thought it was about time I visited another British institution with Steven Moffat. I’m very much looking forward to moving into Number 10 with Steven’s cracking scripts and working with Sue Vertue, Ben Palmer, Rafe Spall and Katherine Kelly.”

Number 10 will air on Channel 4, with a release date yet to be confirmed.
