Bergerac, the perfect Jersey-set crime drama centred on an iconic “troubled detective”, has landed a new streaming home in the UK. Previously only available to stream on U and to watch on U&DRAMA, the hit series was recently added to Channel 4.

All six episodes of the first season of the show are now available via Channel 4’s streaming service, meaning fans in the UK can now catch it for free with ads via both platforms.

Billed as a modern re-imagining of the iconic 1980s drama starring John Nettles, the show follows the titular detective Jim Bergerac as he grapples with life as a widower while attempting to solve one murder-mystery across all six episodes.

The Split star Damien Molony takes on the role of Bergerac for the reboot and is joined on the cast by Zoë Wanamaker, Robert Gilbert, Sasha Behar and Chloé Sweetlove.

A hit among viewers and critics alike, production for a second season is already well under way, with a release date coming sometime this year, though an exact date has yet to be confirmed.

Following its release in February last year, the reboot, which boasts a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, became the highest-rated programme on U&Drama ever.

In our review, Digital Spy praised the show for changing its format and moving away from the old show, which saw the detective solve one murder-mystery per episode.

We wrote: “By deciding not to redirect the focus every episode, the show never lets up. And for our protagonist, the pressure doesn’t ever dissipate either.

“Instead it sits with him, like a weight, almost mirroring the oppressiveness of his trauma. All in all, it creates a much more intimate viewing experience.”

Last year the show announced that it would be adding some exciting new cast members to its line-up for season two, including Adrian Edmondson, Lesley Sharp, Camilla Beeput, Turlough Convery, and Charles Dale.

Season two “will see Jim Bergerac starting to put his life back together, while his mother-in-law Charlie Hungerford (Wanamaker) has a new man in her life (Edmondson)”.

Bergerac is available to stream on U and Channel 4.
