Sherlock star Martin Freeman has addressed what makes his upcoming whodunit, Netflix series Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, surprising. Freeman is part of the stacked cast of the series, which serves as an adaptation of Christie’s 1929 novel The Seven Dials Mystery.
Written by Chris Chibnall, who showran Doctor Who between 2018 and 2022, the Netflix series stars How To Have Sex’s Mia McKenna-Bruce as Lady Eileen ‘Bundle’ Brent and Helena Bonham Carter as Lady Caterham.
Freeman plays Superintendent Battle, while Queen Charlotte star Corey Mylchreest portrays Gerry Wade. Nabhaan Rizwan and Edward Bluemel also star as Ronnie Devereux and Jimmy Thesiger, respectively.
Weighing in on the new series, directed by Chris Sweeney, Freeman said he was “surprised” by Christie’s story because the character of Bundle, played by McKenna-Bruce, feels different than other detectives penned by the author.

“I didn’t really grow up with Christie, but the character of Bundle surprised me because she’s much younger than Marple and Poirot,” Freeman said (via RadioTimes).
“Chris’s scripts bring it up to date in a way that feels relatable without trying to be hip and cool,” the star added. “It has a contemporary feel, while not cheating on the period.”

McKenna-Bruce’s Bundle is described as “the unlikeliest of sleuths” in the official synopsis.
“England. 1925. At a lavish country house party, a practical joke appears to have gone horribly, murderously wrong,” the synopsis teases.
