Coronation Street spoilers follow from Monday’s episode (9 February), which is available to watch now on ITVX and YouTube but hasn’t yet aired on ITV1.

Coronation Street’s Bernie Winter-Alahan finally reveals the truth about her recent ill-advised night out. Though she confesses to taking drugs, she fails to mention her run-in with newcomer Mal Roper. But will her husband Dev discover her secret?

Bernie met Mal at the Chariot Square Hotel a few weeks ago, as she drowned her sorrows over Billy Mayhew’s death. The pair became fast friends and spent the evening drinking together, before heading up to his hotel room with some drugs.

After sharing a kiss, Bernie asserted she was married and later left the hotel. However, the next day, she was horrified to learn that electrician Mal would be working in Roy Cropper’s flat with no solid end date in sight.

In tonight’s episode, Ryan Connor recognises Mal in the cafe, having seen him and Bernie in the hotel room the other week. He raises his eyebrows but promises not to mention what he saw to Dev or Gemma.

Later, Bernie tells Gemma that there’s more to her night out story than she originally shared. She maintains that “nothing happened” but reveals that Mal kissed her.

When the newcomer interrupts their conversation, Bernie tells Gemma that he was the one she “got wrecked with”. Her horrified daughter insists she comes clean to Dev.

“Right, well, there’s no way this ain’t gonna come out, is there? So, if nothing happened, you need to tell Dev sharpish,” Gemma says.

Meanwhile, Dev surprises Bernie with a bouquet of flowers to show his appreciation. However, she is reluctant to accept his praise, confessing: “I’ve messed it all up again.”

She explains: “The day after the funeral, I went out by myself. I scored some pills. I think they were MDMA. And they were that strong, the club staff they found me passed out in the toilet [and] called an ambulance.”

Bernie decides not to mention her time with Mal, but Dev is appalled nonetheless. He reminds her that Asha almost died due to an overdose, and chastises her for “casually taking drugs” and slipping back into her old ways.

“You do what you want, OK? You live your life. I’m sorry I tried to help,” he says, before storming off.

How will Dev react when he learns the whole truth?
